joejoe352 Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 Hey guys looking to upgrade my frog rods reel, and I'm stuck between the lews bb1 and the revo sx, I have a few lew's and love them, but also love my revo s, I'm thinking the Revos drag would be a big plus but I'm hearing the mag breaks aren't the best and the bb1 would cast a lot better? Any input you guys have would help a lot! 1 Quote
BassinB Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 If I'm not mistaken the BB1 does not have a conventional anti-reverse system. For a frog rod I look for 3 things. 1) be able to bomb the bait waaaaay back into the pads 2) as much drag as i can get to horse a fish out and 3) Be able to lay down a solid hookset through pads, matted vegetation, and at a distance. The Bb1 was designed as a cranking reel by Mr. Fritts, I'd go with the revo sx. But to each his own. Quote
joejoe352 Posted April 13, 2013 Author Posted April 13, 2013 Only the low gear ratio bb1 has the muti stop anything about 5:1 is the instant Quote
OkeechobeeAngler Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 Either one will be fine. Choose which ever you are the most comfortable with. Quote

38 Super Fan Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 I'd go with a Super Duty over a BB1, I've been impressed with my SD. Quote
Super User Teal Posted April 13, 2013 Super User Posted April 13, 2013 Why not a Lews TP... that would be my choice... i want a 7:1 reel that is light enough to throw the hollow body frogs, soft plastic topwaters, and light topwater baits. Just because the reel is light enough to handle light lures doesnt mean it can handle big fish, or alot of slop. The BB1 wouldnt be a bad idea,...but TP is my pick You can always upgrade the drag on the TP iif that is a sticking point. Quote
Sodus Bay Scooter Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 I don't have the lews but the new sx can launch baits mad far. Apparently Abu redid their sx mag brakes but anyway I'm able to cast with no probs at all. Nice light smooth reel. Quote
joejoe352 Posted April 13, 2013 Author Posted April 13, 2013 Thanks for the replies guys and I know the tp are great (I have a couple) , but they are little to light for my rod and don't balance as well as it could and lag do you have the gen 3 revo sx? Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted April 13, 2013 Super User Posted April 13, 2013 I currently have a 2nd Gen SX for my frogging reel and I really like it. The 3rd gen SX's are lighter and bit smaller, great modifications in my book. The only experience I have with Lews is the MG speed spool and IMO its also a great reel. Quote

Yes, gen 3. Sorry, should of mentioned that. Quote
38 Super Fan Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 I've got a gen2 SX I like very well, but with as cheap as Super Dutys have been going on eBay lately, that's what I'd go with. The SD is farily heavy too, it's kind of a beefed up TP, with only mag brakes. Quote
joejoe352 Posted April 13, 2013 Author Posted April 13, 2013 Thanks for your input guys, what's the main difference between the tp and sd, there are a lot of tp going for 130 on ebay right now so I would almost rather get that Quote
38 Super Fan Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 The SD has brass gears, longer aluminum handle, different spool that's braid ready, no external lube port, only has mag brakes, and weighs about 7.8oz, vs. 6.7 oz on the TP. I own several of both, I like the SD for heavy cover, but a TP would still work. Both models have been selling low on eBay lately, and I've loaded up on both. Quote
