Super User flyfisher Posted April 14, 2013 Author Super User Posted April 14, 2013 Good deal. Size doesnt matter too much with new techniques..its a good way to learn the technique and hook set that works for you with that technique. I looooooove swimming a jig, i call it the stealth spinner bait. What colors worked for you today and where were you fishin? I was fishing a local lake that's around 75 acres. I was using a SK swim jig in bluegill with a pearl money minnow trailer. These were the first fish I have ever caught on a swim jig and they definitely hit pretty hard and I was also surprised at how well it came through the thick grass I was fishing. Quote
Jake P Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Imitating shad i would guess. Ive had more luck with natural colors that match up well with pan fish as far as swimming a jig. The cool thing is that these color combos are good crawfish imitators too. Green pumpkin with orange, pb&j, okeechobee craw..ect..dark brown with light brown and orange... all good things to swim a jig with.   Teal, check this out.  I was emailing back and forth with Mike trying to come up with a natural looking Bream color. He sent me this  He said it wasnt quite on his site yet but would be soon. I ordered it on his Elite Swim head and trail it with a Rage Tail Menace in GP. Looks KILLER!  This is my favorite swim style jig. From the head design, skirt color and all the way to the trailer. I use this jig to flip anything where I will be swimming the jig out. If im flipping somethin I want to reach bottom i go for the brush head, otherwise this gets the nod.  All in all it has an incredible panfish profile. Quote

Super User Teal Posted April 14, 2013 Super User Posted April 14, 2013 This is one of my go to jigs for any application: casting, flipping, pitching, skipping under docks, ans swimming 1 Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted April 14, 2013 Super User Posted April 14, 2013 Thanks for the advice. I currently plan on throwing them on a 7'mhf mojo bass that i feel is actually a little heavier than the rating mated up with a 6.5:1 citica and 50lb braid that doubles as my frog rod. Now if i fall in love with jig fishing, i may just have to get a more specific set up  I have a feeling you will be buying some more combos in the future.    Good luck Buddy! Downeaster2010 Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 I have been fishing rubber worms and jigs for over 25 years, and in reality rubber worms for almost 40. It seems everyone has a confidence lure, be it worm, jig or plug. The only way to get more confidence lures is to leave your most confident lures home, then you must use others to gain confidence. Of all my lures worms and jigs are my all time favorites.  To gain confidence in jigs make sure you put a trailer on the hook. Years past we used to use Uncle Josh pork rind, but today there are many different combos that are good. A jig and pig was with the rind, but often I like to use a jig and eel, which would be a rubber worm or curly tail on the hook. Now I like the craws on the hook. Plugs will catch a lot of fish, worms will catch a lot and generally a little bigger, and jigs with a trailer will catch the bigger of those mentioned. Once confidence in the jig is accepted it will soon be one of your favorites, especially in cabbage or coon tail.  It took a long time but I have confidence in 10 or more different bait types. It certainly help to be able to look at the water and know which one to use in the given situation. Super User Sam Posted April 14, 2013 Super User Posted April 14, 2013 PB&J is a must. Â You just gotta have it. Â Add it to your next order and throw it everywhere. Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted April 14, 2013 Author Super User Posted April 14, 2013 Here are three of the swim jig fish I caught....all were from the same hole and caught within probably 20-30 minutes. 1 Quote
flipin4bass Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 I'll second that ~  A-Jay  rig A .jpg  rig B.jpg I went shopping for these Boss Hubs after I saw an earlier post by you A-Jay. The heavier punch weights that allow the addiing of skirts are ok for the mats, but I've been looking for something that allows the use of lighter weights for a long time. This setup has turned my creatures into super creatures. You should see it rigged with the Damiki Monster Miki...sick! 1 Quote
BassThumb Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Well after having minor success with jigs this winter i have decided to go full out and give them the attention they deserve. I placed my order with Seibert and am looking forward to getting my 8 jigs in 4 colors and all the same 1/2 oz size and all with the grass head with one of each color being a rattle and one the standard wire tie.  Anyways, just thought i would share  It'll be a rewarding choice. While 1/2 oz. is my go-to jig weight, don't hesitate to mix in some different weights as well. The rate of fall is very important sometimes. I don't often use 3/8 oz. jigs, but 3/4 and 1/4 oz. get plenty of use. Quote
Diggy Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Im still committed. My friend was trying to get me to use senkos today as he was. He was catching many fish, probably about 15.  I caught about 10 fish today on the jig, which is the most Ive ever caught. Real good confidence building day. A few near 4lbs  I will also say that the all terrain tackle football jig has been the best football jig that "I've" uses thus far. I usually get snagged at this lake I fish at within 3 casts. I did end up losing one jig today but after many fish, but at another lake I was fishing in the same area.  Jim Moynagh rock jig     I have 10-12 jigs coming from Northstar Custom baits shortly. I cant wait to try those out  Quote
A-Rob Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 You won't regret it! I always start with a jig on my flipping/pitching stick and will only change it to a straight shank hook/soft plastic combo if the grass is just so thick I'm picking weeds off it ever cast.'  I love feeling the pop of a bass inhaling a jig! Quote
CPBassFishing Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I recently started fishing jigs and I'm addicted for sure. First time fishing a jig got me a 3 pounder out of a river that I used to only catch dinks on senkos out of. Match the head style to your cover and you'll hardly get hung up IMO. Quote
jerzeeD Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I have decided to give jigs a good run this year myself. I just didn't have $ to throw at a lot of jigs and trailers to start with. Unfortunately my love of Huddleston weedless shads and grass minnows drove me to spend over 100 bucks stocking up on them. I also needed to stock up on lizards and worms for T rigging...Then a new Avid and Purist reel for my Huddlestons....Then some live target cranks...and then. O f%&k it...you see where this is going! Anyway, I picked up 4 Terminator grass jigs in 1/2 oz. 2 are black with blue and purple in the skirts, and the other 2 are pumpkinseed. Both are high success colors for me on T-rigged plastics. I bought some Trigger X aggression 4" twin tail grubs for trailers. Let's see how this goes. I will be throwing them on a 6'6" St. Croix Premier MH/F with a Pflueger Medalist reel with 15. Lb. P-line CX as the line ( I am a all spinning gear guy). On a side note, has anyone used Trigger X plastics? I usually stick to Zoom 85% of the time with some Berkeley PB plastics sprinkled in. I was just wondering if this company makes good soft plastic baits. Quote
Jig Meister Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 JIgs are one of the few baits that have tons of action just sitting in the water. The bass can not resist that alive look the skirt gets when the water fluffs it. Quote
evinrude Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Hello Fishermen, First Post on this forum. I've been a Bass Club Fisherman for the last 35 years and a Jig and Pork is my go to bait. I make my own jigs and have found that certain color combinations produce far better than others. In the spring I like black and green. Summer is black and blue and fall is brown and orange. ALWAYS fish a jig on a fast breaking shore line or Point. That is: where shallow water meets deeper water in a short distance. That's when a Jig is at it's best. Also, when night fishing I use a Black and red jig. Again on those fast break shore lines. hope this helps...............evinrude Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted April 17, 2013 Author Super User Posted April 17, 2013 My order should be here tomorrow so hopefully i ge a chance to try them out this weekend if not sooner  Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 I think I orderd the same time as you, FF. Except I got Brush Jigs, and a couple OOMOD Swim Jigs. Had to get Mike to tie up some 1st Gen Mod Storm Series for me as well.  I think I've only caught 2 fish on jigs. Both THUMPED it.  Good luck on those, hope to see some fat VA greenies!! 1 Quote
Diggy Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 I lost 3 jigs in about 30 mins the other day and missed every fish that hit. I wont be fishing the jigs I ordered there, off the shelf for me at certain locations. Quote

I lost my beloved 1/2 oz black/blue hack attack the other day thanks to a hookset into a log because a bluegill nibbled at the trailer. (Got the 3 ticks characteristic of a jig bite.) Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted April 18, 2013 Super User Posted April 18, 2013 Last weekend I had my first taste of fishing a football jig. Â I caught 3 good size fish in less than an hour on that thing. Â It's addicting! Â I will be doing way more jig fishing in 2013! Quote
Diggy Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 bluegill maybe? I lost my beloved 1/2 oz black/blue hack attack the other day thanks to a hookset into a log because a bluegill nibbled at the trailer. (Got the 3 ticks characteristic of a jig bite.) They were bass, I just had the drag loosened. I always forget to set it on the 1st cast. Then I loosened it again after trying to free a hang up and for got to set it back...repeat process. Â I like that hack attack jig also. I have 1 3/8th oz jig that I wont fish in that spot because I dont want to risk losing it. I save it for the grassy bottom spots. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted April 18, 2013 Author Super User Posted April 18, 2013 My jigs came in today......talk about a quick turn around time and great looking jigs for sure, almost to pretty to fish with, almost 1 Quote
