JunkYard814 Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 I still haven't purchased a spinning rod for my finesse soft plastics. I was planning on getting a St. Croix Avid in a 6'6" ML XF or around those specs. I just noticed that Gander Mountain now has a rebate special going for St. Croix rods and I can now get a Legend for pretty much the same price I was about to spend on an Avid. I've also been hearing a lot about these Black *** rods. Any of you're thoughts or suggestions would be awesome. Quote
motodmast Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Ive never had a st.croix but i do have the 7'1 M *** black, and its perfect for shakey head, finesse worms, trick worms, tubes.. etc.. and if your worried about the sensitivity or components on the rod being bad cause its only $100, youre way wrong, this rod fishes like a $200+ rod. Its simply amazing! Quote

I just bought the 6'3" Avid MLXF rod and have been extremely impressed with it. Just caught a 4 pounder on it yesterday. Got a Daiwa Lexa 2000SH mounted to it, 10 lb braid + 8 lb XPS Fluoro. Fantastic feel. So yeah, Avid is all they say and then some.... Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted April 12, 2013 Super User Posted April 12, 2013 IMHO, the St Croix 6'8" M/XF blank is about as good as it gets for a finesse jig/worm spinning rod. They make it in several lines (Mojo, Rage, Avid, LTB, Leg. Elite, and Leg. Xt.) pick how much you want to spend and you'll have a great rod. I own the Mojo, and it get's used side by side all year long with my Avids, and Legend Tournaments, and it has not disappointed one bit. I imagine the Avid (and higher) priced rods would be even better. Quote
SissySticks Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Have a custom builder build you up a Batson Rainshadow 802.75 blank in either the RX7 or RX8 series. Its a 6'8" MXF somewhat like the St. Croix but a tad more powerful in the butt IMHO. My favorite all around blank for finesse plastic fishing. I have literally 2 dozen spinning rods, and I like many of them for many reasons, but if I had to fish with just 1 rod for the rest of my life, it would be that blank in the RX8 series with a tennessee handle and titanium framed alconites, which you can get built for about $200. If it's plastic and less than 10", you can do it with that rod. Quote
thehooligan Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 I dont think you can go wrong with an *** at $100, ill be picking one up soon. Quote

Super User lmbfisherman Posted April 12, 2013 Super User Posted April 12, 2013 My vote would be the St. Croix Legend if it will be the same price as the Avid. Quote
JellyMan Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 It's a casting rod but I use a Mojo Bass 7' M/F for all my weightless plastics. I love it. Paired up on a Revo STX it's an awesome combo. Did a little poking around on the *** Black rods... Looks real nice! I'de love to get one in my hands to check it out. Quote
JunkYard814 Posted April 12, 2013 Author Posted April 12, 2013 I have a Mojo for my cranking rod and I'm not really interested in getting another one. I wanted the Avid, but I would have to imagine the Legend would be a better rod. Also I noticed the Legend comes in either a ML / F or M / XF. Decisions decisions. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted April 12, 2013 Super User Posted April 12, 2013 I'd go with the M/XF as this maybe more of an all around rod vs ML/F. Quote
rmcguirk Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 I have the Avid 6'9" ML XF. It is a beautiful stick and I like it a lot. I bought it for shakey head, light plastics and drop shot. If I had to do it all over again, I might opt instead for the 6'8" MXF instead, though. Just a bit more versatile. 1 Quote

The rod is dynamite and well worth the money. Quote
mjseverson24 Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 just for thought st. criox triumph 7' ML $70.00 great rod, better price. Buy two for what you wanted to spend on the one. Mitch Quote
DaveT63 Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 I Don't Know About The ***, But Keep In Mind The Avids And Legends Come With Lifetime Warranties. Fantastic Rods, Too! Quote
JunkYard814 Posted April 17, 2013 Author Posted April 17, 2013 Well I caved in today and purchased the St. Croix Legend Tournament spinning rod in the 6' 10" ML XF specs. I'll give you a review when it gets in and I get to try it out. Quote
jtesch Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 I have the Avid 6'6 ml xf and it is a great rod but a little to light for most bass fishing. If you can find last years shimano cumara in 6'8 m at a clearance price that's a fantastic finnese rod Quote
