Robertqq Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Hello, Will be trying Braid, PowerPro for the first time this season. A bit of a beginner. Have never used Braid before. UltraLight Spinning setup. Small Pond/Lake fishing; Crappies and Smallmouth, mainly. a. do you folks use a mono leader, or tie the lure directly when using Braid ? b. I like and use almost exclusively small MEPPS spinners, and at times plastic worms. Since this Braid floats, what's a good way of getting the MEPPS or worm down a few feet ? A mono leader of about a foot ? A small split shot a foot or so from the lure ? Texas rig all the time ? Or,...? c. Should Braid perhaps just be used for true topwater fishing, and just have another spare spool of mono for most everything else ? Any hints would be most appreciated. Thanks. Quote
bullett 21 Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Tie a fluro carbon to your braid if all possible .Braid is fine ,just use fluro as a leader Quote
motodmast Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 i would use the braid, then tie on a fluoro leader, since fluorocarbon sinks, that will help you mepps sink some. and i would also use a small 1/16 clamp on sinker about 2 feet in front of the mepps Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted April 11, 2013 Super User Posted April 11, 2013 use sufix 832.it sinks.its the only braid that ddoes other than leadcore braids. Quote
SissySticks Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 X2 on Sufix. Great line and sinks (not as fast as fluoro, but MUCH faster than other braids). Reasonably priced and lasts forever. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 12, 2013 Super User Posted April 12, 2013 Only thing I would do when using braid and an inline spinner is to use a ball bearing swivel or better yet a ball chain swivel to reduce line twist, not that it will be totally eliminated. If I were overly concerned about depth I'd put a small split shot on. Quote
Robertqq Posted April 12, 2013 Author Posted April 12, 2013 From OP: For Motodmast, et al, Much thanks for all the suggestions. A real beginner, but I guess asking questions like this is the best way to learn: If I tie on a small split shot a foot, or even more, from the MEPPS to help sink it, how does the split shot get thru the rod guides ? I imagine that when I cast, I would have no more than about 6 inches or so of line out from the tip at the beginning of the cast. (And, if I attach some Fluorocarbon on as a leader, as suggested, what's the correct knot to use to get thru some pretty small rod guides ?) Regards, Bob Quote
alexczarn Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 I always use a leader when fishing with braid. Try the Albright or Uni knot to join leader to braid. That is what I use. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted April 12, 2013 Super User Posted April 12, 2013 If I tie on a small split shot a foot, or even more, from the MEPPS to help sink it, how does the split shot get thru the rod guides ? I suggest placing the split shot directly in front of the swivel that Snooky suggests. oe Quote
