I add split rings to all my Spooks. I prefer the oval type, but many of mine still have the original split ring I put on them.  I can't speak for Sammys because I don't use them, but I like my Spooks to sit tail down when I want them to stay in an area  and sit vertical if I want to keep the bait moving toward me.

A Sammy, although a walking bait, I think would work better without a split ring as their action also combines the nose of the bait rising up and the extra hardware might dampen that part of the action.  At the very least, I'd tie a loop knot on any walking bait, including frogs, that I don't use a split ring on.

I tie direct to spooks without problem. The only sammy I have, I tried all different ways and I cannot walk the thing. A friend of mine who swears by Sammy's also tried to walk mine and couldn't either. So seems that mine may be defective in some way.

I'd like to see a spook lie vertical...

LOL  my mistake, although if you add enough SuspenDots to the tail area you might get it to.

No, I don't use split rings, or anything else on the front of any of my topwater baits. Tie direct. I have tried it, and I don't like it, and catch more without it. No loop knots either, just a plain old boring palomar knot.

The Sammy doesn't come with a split ring.   I've done best on using the sammy bait when I tie some kind of loop knot.  I generally use pretty stout line, at least 14 lb test and more often than not 17 or 20.

Yes the sammy should sit vertical at rest. Split rings aren't needed. Don't be too upset if it doesn't textbook walk like a spook, it isn't supposed to. Ive used the 85's exclusively for about 8 years and its my favorite topwater. The way it "flits" across the surface, sometimes spitting, partially going under, rolling, etc drives fish nuts.

The larger models and the wood version walk a little better if that's important to you.

Agree with everything craww said.

The sammy 85 is also my favorite topwater bait, there isnt a spook out there that has an action like the sammy. Only reason i still fish spooks is for when im fishing topwater in heavily pickerel populated lakes.

I like my Sammy but I find the Strike King KVD Sexy Dawg has the best and easiest WTD action of any of them.
