SuskyDude Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 (edited) So i recieved my new Legend Extreme spinning rod in the mail a few weeks ago. Got a 7' med., fast action. It's light, sensitive, looks cool, all of that. I really love it, but theres just one little thing missing......a dang hook keeper! Really? A dang near $400 dollar rod, and it doesn't have a hook keeper? I mean, why? Don't tell me a half inch of wire was going to add too much weight! Sometimes I feel like they're trying to re-engineer the wheel. edit: oops, wrong forum, sorry mods! Edited April 10, 2013 by SuskyDude Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted April 10, 2013 Super User Posted April 10, 2013 I agree 100% I just use the guide. Quote
OkeechobeeAngler Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Use the reel. I hate them lil keepers anyways. Quote
aaron4mvp Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Whether or not you use the hook keeper, there is no reason for a 400 hundred dollar rod shouldn't come with one. 1 Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted April 10, 2013 Super User Posted April 10, 2013 Actually....i'm starting to shy away from using hook keepers as I learned the hard way. I had a jerkbait on one of mine with a lure wrap secured on it and the point from one of the hooks dug into the clear coat of the rod and fractured the clear coat. Nice sharp point on the lure....not good for the rod. It was a Mojo, which is double dipped in clear coat just like an Extreme. Be cautious of it. I'd advise not using the guide as you risk damaging that which could result in broke lines or further damage to the guide.Enjoy your rod. It's a beauty...keeper or not. 1 Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted April 10, 2013 Super User Posted April 10, 2013 I have got two of the new extremes & was surprised by the lack of a hook keeper. I talked to Dan Cerenski (not sure about the spelling) and asked him why no hook keeper. His response was they can't get it right so they left it off. According to Dan some people don't want them. Some people complain they are located in the wrong spot, top versus bottom or on the side. You can add a fuji hook keeper or a rubber ring style. Or you can have whatever style you want installed my a rod builder. Dan said the addition of a hook keeper will not void the warranty. 1 Quote

Capt.Bob Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 My newest Extreme's or Elites are 2012 models, but never heard of one coming without a hookeeper. As far as using the guide, I have done this on rods without a hookeeper, but not in the eye, I use the foot between the eye and the rod, never worry about the insert that way and works great. The last two I bought were an XC72MHM and a XC610MXF, they had hookeepers but only had half the handle, their was a chunk of cork missing in the middle, But my Rod builder is taking care of that. Unless you are getting a fabulous discount on the Legend Extreme, Legend Elite, Tournament, or Avid, I go with the blank I want and have it Built, usually less than the price of a factory model, and you get it your way. When I spend this kind of money I want what I want the way I want, it realy isn't more expensive, you just can't have it the same day, well worth the wait. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted April 11, 2013 Super User Posted April 11, 2013 I went and looked at my 2012 Extreme and I don't see how it would be in the way of anything? I wish my 2013 had the same holder. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 11, 2013 Super User Posted April 11, 2013 I never use a hook keeper and don't miss them on the rods that don't have them. Never damaged or nicked guide ever, but like Capt Bob I sometimes use the cross member of the guide. For transportation in my car I do not have have a lure tied on, only a fresh leader, on the way home everything is cut off. 1 Quote
