I know for frogs your supposed to wait 2 or 3 seconds before the hookset but what about lures like poppers or spooks?  Do you wait for those too or just set when you see the strike or what?

When fishing any topwater, personally I like to reel down to the fish and feel it then lay the wood to them.  Not necessarily count, but when I feel the fish he gets stuck.

I wait till I feel the fish almost always, or reel down and feel them if the lure is gone and I don't feel them. Using a glass or composite rod helps with topwaters, as well as keeping them hooked.

I will wait until I feel the fish after I take in the slack line the majority of the time.  A quick hook set rather than a hard one and if they're not holding on to the bait, I'll just reel without attempting to set it. For some reason when the fish feel the resistance, they'll turn and basically hook themselves.

One thing I will mention is that I see way too many anglers using mono that isn't heavy enough for this type of presentation.  Heavy (17lb.+) mono will not only lay on top of the water better than lighter line, it will increase the odds of a good hook set.

With slower moving baits like prop baits or poppers I set if I can't see it anymore or if I feel the fish. With faster moving baits like a spook, buzzbait, or jitterbug I wait to feel the fish because I don't enjoy having to dodge my bait as it flies back at the boat.

I wait a few seconds and use more a pulling hookset then a jerking hookset when using trebles.
