Globadoc Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Last year, I replaced my beloved Veritas 7' M spinning rod due to a broken tip. The new Veritas (same model) just doesn't feel as light or as sensitive as the first one, even with the same reel, line, etc. If I had bought the second one first, I think I would have gotten rid of it. While it's not quite a rock, it just ain't the same and I'm certainly not enjoying it much. Have any of you have ever had a problem with two or rods of the same brand that just don't feel the same, no matter what? Quote
TNBassin' Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Are you using the same line type with this new one? Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted April 10, 2013 Super User Posted April 10, 2013 Can you go to a dealer and grab one off the shelf and see if it feels like your old one? Quote
TNBassin' Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 I've got 2 Veritas rods, and neither feel or behave any differently than the other. That's pretty strange, but given Abus QC issues with the Veritas I don't doubt that there are differences. You should feel blessed you got one with guides that are actually straight, and not spiraled around the blank. 2 Quote
Topwaterspook Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 I've had a similar situation. These manufacturers are always looking for a way to cut costs. More often than not, they dimish the quality of the original. I'm a Shimano guy and the last Curado I got isn't nearly as smooth as some that are 15 years old. Quote
BassThumb Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 I've had that problem with rods within the same lineup, but never with 2 rods of the exact same model. An example I've seen would be the Shimano Crucial 7' MH/F. As far as I'm concerned, it's about as sensitive as an average $50 rod. Quote

That's common with Shimano's, they get smoother with age, especially if you haven't stripped them down and cleaned them of their original, from the factory grease/lube. Quote
fishingman88 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 I've actually experienced this quite a bit on some of my higher end custom saltwater rods. Each rod even though it is built on the same blank, same guides, etc. has a different feel to it. I think it derives to QC issues when they were being made, but it hasn't detracted from the overall performance. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted April 10, 2013 Super User Posted April 10, 2013 No 2 rods are identical, some brands or models are more consistent than others, but there are always differences. Why I won't buy a rod without handling it first. I used to make a good living customizing supposedly identical carbon fibre sporting goods equipment for pro players. Product managers of the different brands would assure me that unlike the competition, their products were all consistent, they weren't. Quote
21farms Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 i reported almost the same exact issue in another forum. i have a 2.5-year old veritas 7' medium/mod-fast casting rod that i absolutely adored. it weighed 4.1 ounces and was CRISP. one day, my braided line got caught in the trolling motor and pulled my rod tip down into the blades and snapped off the top 5 inches. i bought a replacement of the exact same rod and, straight out of the rod tube, i could tell there was something different about it. it felt heavier so i put it on the same accurate scale i always use and it came it at 4.4 ounces. i also doesn't feel as "alive". i think typical manufacturing variances with rods (since most are still rolled by hand) are the reasons most manufacturers don't list rod weights. 1 Quote
Globadoc Posted April 10, 2013 Author Posted April 10, 2013 Well at least it hasn't been just me. I wish I had had a scale to weigh them just to test it out, but I only had the feel to go by. It took me a few trips to realize that something just wasn't the same about this one. Man, I miss the old one. Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 10, 2013 Super User Posted April 10, 2013 Mass produced rod blanks are made off shore in China, S.Korea, Mexico, Melasenia Pacific Rim countries, etc. Each year a contract is awarded to one or more of those countries to build rods and reels of various models. Expecting a mass produced rod to be similar year to year with the same make and model number is unrealistic. Quality control doesn't exist in the countries that make these mass produced rods, you are the quality control, so take it or send it back for another rod, that is how it's done today with this type of product. Ima Bass Ninja Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Maybe they listened to the complaints of the fist generation snapping problems and made the new ones thicker and more durable. Just a theory. Quote

It could be you got a blank on the heavier/stronger side. If they don't strictly manage the blanks used in their rods, there is going to be inconsistencies. Quote
jignfule Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 I've got 2 MBR 844 GLX, no difference at all in the two. Quote
