Blues19 Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 how do you fish a chatterbait? any specific technique? or just work it like a spinner or swim jig I typically fish it like a spinnerbait. Just crank that mug, maybe give it a twitch or two. Quote
TNBassin' Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Oh, and the trailers are a must on this bait IMHO. I tried the havoc subwoofer after a suggestion in another post and love that as a trailer. Think of it as the evil child of a jig and a spinnerbait, and have fun with it. For the Boogee baits I use some Rage Tail grubs, and for my chatter baits I've been sticking with the trailers that come with them. I will try the subwoofers though and see what I can do. thanks for the tip. Quote

I can feel it in my rod tip. Quote

TNBassin' Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 I got about $17 on my BPS Outdoor rewards card, so I'll pick up a few packs with that. Our Academy sucks compared to everyone else it seems. Any time I go to the one in Knoxville, there aren't any deals going on. Rod selection sucks too. The only thing about Academy is that our BPS will price match them, so if those subwoofers are on sale online too, I can get them for cheap at BPS too. Quote

If they don't have any I've got a bunch at the house and can send some. I'm saving all my gear points for either a Core or MGX next reel trade Quote
Super User Sam Posted April 12, 2013 Super User Posted April 12, 2013 A guy in my club won our Rappahannock River tournament a few years ago fishing from the back of my boat with a..........chatterbait! We ran up river to an inlet and I threw a buzzbait. Not one hit. He threw a white chatterbait and caught three large ladies. Go figure? A chatterbait is a vibrating jig. I have caught many bass on my chatterbaits. As for styles, I like the pro model with the large eye. Do you need a trailer hook? Yep. Do you need a trailer? Sometimes if you want to bulk up the bait in warmer water. But ALWAYS add a trailer hook to your chatterbait, no matter the brand or style. Check the hook's sharpness when you take it out of the package. I have found the hooks to be a little dull and need to be sharpened with a file. I also use a cranking rod (medium heavy) and flourocarbon line (12 pound test) on a baitcaster. As the guys said, you need a dark one and a light one. I have many varieties and like the white/chartruse, white and blue/black the best. But anything goes. Don't forget to use scent on your chatterbait. Good luck learning the technique and let us know how you do. Quote

BuckMaxx Posted April 12, 2013 Author Posted April 12, 2013 Man thanks for all the great info. I will be picking some up! One of the guys in my Bass club was talking about them the other day. I have always been a SB fisherman... May be time for a change. Quote
5fishlimit Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Smallies are what got me using chatterbaits to begin with. Catfish love them, too. Quote
merc1997 Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 what are your thoughts on why you feel the need to use a trailer hook on a vibrating jig? after all it is a jig type bait, just as a swim jig. i do consistently hear of people claiming that the landing ratio to hookups is not too high on vibrating jigs. so, was wondering your reasons for using a trailer hook. thanks. bo A guy in my club won our Rappahannock River tournament a few years ago fishing from the back of my boat with a..........chatterbait!
