Super User ww2farmer Posted April 10, 2013 Super User Posted April 10, 2013 If it's just the guide, and it didn't bust the tip of the blank it's a pretty easy fix, and will be as good as new with a replacement guide on it. I have lost many a top guide insert over the years and just put a new guide on. Wal-Mart even sells a little kit of them to get you going again quick till you get the proper one from Abu. Quote
Quitlimpin Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 whoa. Id hooked up the biggest and heaviest treble and scrapped the bottom clean. That sucks. My condolences. We did just that. Probably spent 2hrs trying to snag it. It was sickening to say the least. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted April 10, 2013 Author Super User Posted April 10, 2013 I know Abu will take care of it how do I get the old guide off? Quote
Super User deep Posted April 10, 2013 Super User Posted April 10, 2013 That's nothing! Heat the tip, take it off, put a new tip-top on. Takes less than 5 minutes. 3 Quote
Quitlimpin Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Use a lighter or even better a heat gun. Should melt the glue/epoxy and then slide it off. Quote
EvanT123 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 I would defer to someone more experienced then me and suggest you visit BassResource's YouTube channel. They have a video on there about it, I followed their advice and haven't had a problem since. One thing about Walmart is the one I went to had the tip fix kit but none of the tips fit the rod tip snug enough. If you have a tackle shop near maybe then can size it. There are also tackle websites out there where you can order them. I ordered 2 of each size that I thought was closest. 8 bucks and now I have the rest in case it happens again. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted April 10, 2013 Super User Posted April 10, 2013 That's nothing! Heat the tip, take it off, put a new tip-top on. Takes less than 5 minutes. Yup. If I can do it, and I have many times. Anyone can. 1 Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted April 10, 2013 Author Super User Posted April 10, 2013 That's what I thought I'm still calling Abu who knows maybe they will send a rod haha or at least a matching tip iv put the Walmart tips on rods iv snapped the tip off and they never seem to fit right. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 10, 2013 Global Moderator Posted April 10, 2013 That's nothing! Heat the tip, take it off, put a new tip-top on. Takes less than 5 minutes. Just make sure to keep moving the lighter or turning the rod and keep the flame on the metal. The glue will breakdown and you can use pliers to slide the tip top off. They make a handy little tool to measure what size the tip is and you can get a new one and glue it back on and you'll be good to go. Used to be one of my specialties when I worked at Cabela's and I've done it hundreds of times for people but you can do it with no experience in a few minutes easy. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted April 10, 2013 Super User Posted April 10, 2013 Dont give them that story. Just say it broke on a hookset. PoWhat has happened to just plain old honesty. I have a nearly new rod sitting in my room right now. It has about a foot broken off the tip. I stepped on the darn thing. I could used have used your bull crap story and gotten a new rod, but I feel I am better than that. NO wait, I know I am better than that. Hootie 5 Quote

I used to work in customer service and you wouldn't believe the amount of products that were returned because of abuse Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted April 10, 2013 Super User Posted April 10, 2013 Excuse me for trying to help. I was simply trying to help someone out. My intention was more or less to forwarn him not to use that same story because they probably wouldn't cover it. He may not have the luxury of just buying a new rod like some do. Then again, who knows. Clearly we all know that you're a better man than me after this post. my mistake....Good grief. Just so ya know.....lol Besides, telling someone to lie never helps anything. Just read Rockchalks post. Hootie Quote

A couple weeks ago I dumped my 844GLX/Core 50 in about 50 fow. I almost puked. Man, that sucks big time! Never could understand how someone could drop a rod overboard. I could see kicking one overboard off the deck of a bassboat. That is until last year. We tried fishing with shiners. Brother-in-law said to let them run a ways. Leaned forward, snugged up line, and reared back. Body, hands and arms came back but the rod never moved. Into the drink. New Patriarch XT. Luckily in shallow water and we got it out. Now I no longer question how someone could lose a rod overboard. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted April 10, 2013 Author Super User Posted April 10, 2013 I lost a box of shallow cranks over board yesterday fighting my smallmouth I got. Had it just sitting on top of the bungees yesterday and was freaking out at the size of the fish(it's been almost 2 years since I got a nice smallmouth 4-12) and it went over so I just watched it float down the river and after some photos of the fish and weight I paddled to catch up. 1 Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted April 10, 2013 Author Super User Posted April 10, 2013 I emailed Abu got a reply to take pics of the model number, damage, proof of purchase but I lost the receipt which makes me mad cuz I had it set aside with the paperwork for the free hoodie since I got a Revo with it. I explained the situation and that I lost the receipt but purchased it at gander mountain in February. Quote

"Helping" someone by advising them to not give the full story on why the rod broke? If you know the damage occurred from something that is not covered by the warranty, you're committing fraud if you claim that the rod was not abused. Sure, it happens all the time. Doesn't make it right. Clayton86, oftentimes the tip guide's tube is slightly larger than the diameter of the blank. Use a small piece of tape as a shim—just make sure you leave some blank exposed for the glue to adhere to. Quote
