This issue has a lot to do with brand. Not all brands do bulk packaging, and even some that do only offer certain baits in bulk. Off the top of my head, I know you can buy bulk in Gene Larew, Berkley Powerbait, and nearly any of the smaller, regional or hand pour soft plastic companies.

Gambler sells bulk and often has good deals on discontinued colors or overruns.

FYI, and semi-unrelated, but for fun, I just checked, and I'm absolutely confident that a serious recreational bass fisherman (tourney guys are a different breed when it comes to buying baits) could spend $500 at barlowstackle.com and purchase enough soft plastics to probably catch bass, crappie, and walleye, year round, for the rest of their life. Talk about lowering the cost of the hobby (addiction?)! Figure another $600 in rods/reels, $500 in terminal tackle, and $3000 for a good, functional fishing boat, and bass fishing is suddenly looking like the blue-collar hobby it was always supposed to be instead of the $100,000 recreational activity it has been made into by commercialized tournament bass fishing. OK, I'll get off my soapbox now.

Wow, I guess it's different strokes for different folks. I just can't figure out why anyone would

fish generic baits when there are proven winners for just a little bit more. I fish year around,

but I don't think I have ever gone through $100 worth of soft plastic in a year.

I think everybody just has different values when it comes to fishing. Some just value frugality more than others, which has led me personally to fish mostly z-man (because they offer such a high fish/bait ratio) and generic soft plastics. I'm so dorky I'll actually calculate how much a rig on the end of my line cost (i.e. a z-man finesse worm on a custom poured open jighead costs me .52, a full drop shot rig with the same worm costs me .73, a stupid rig with a barlow tube, about 1.00). I don't like to throw anything that cost me more than 1.50 to put on the end of my line, with the exception of a VERY few hard baits that I use occasionally (sammy 65, x-rap). For plastics, my bread and butter, I just can't get to the point where I believe that a senko catches enough more fish than a generic to justify the cost. I also like buying in bulk because it saves me on shipping over time.

But then, I fish out of a 25 year old boat and normally won't spend more than $50 on a rod (with the exception of 2 custom drop shot sticks) or reel, and buy most of my rods and reels used, so I'm hardly the norm.

depends on what your fishing. For someone who uses plastics most of the time, it can get expensive. 100 bucks Is roughly 20 packs of anything rage tail. I have gone through over 2 packs of thumpers in one day.

Barlows sells a 9” ringer worm similar, and I use the word similar very lightly, to the recon. I will be buying a 50 pack for the days a worm bite is red hot.

With that being said, nothing will ever replace rage tail imo.

Like you said, different strokes for different folks.

i like rage tail a lot but i can never get them to last more than 2 fish so i easily go through half a pack to a pack depending on the bite during that day

As a person who is 90% plastics, I agree. However, I tend to think that location and presentation (which are both functions of confidence) are a lot more important than what is actually on the end of your line. To use your 9" worm example, if I'm throwing a 9" Barlow's and another guy is throwing a 9" rage tail, and we both put the bait in front of the same 8lb. largemouth and fished it slowly and with confidence, it would bite both worms. It would probably also bite a lot of other baits if they were fished with concentration and confidence. If throwing the rage tail gives someone more confidence, then that is what is important about the rage tail, not necessarily its action (not to say the action isn't good, I"m sure it is, but so is the action of Barlows). So I just won't pay the money for the rage tail unless I think my presentation and location are perfect already, which they never are.

I agree. there are ALOT of different plastics getting thrown around in the Bassmasters and FLW tournies. All them dudes are catching fish with 8" worms from 15 different manufacturers. They are catching because of WHERE they put the worm. The thing is figuring out the fish want a ribbon tail vs straight tail etc.

This same logic applies to everything in fishing uncluding rods and reels. Chris lane won Bassmasters with All star rods. Who do you know that recommends Allstar rods? Its all about G loomis GLX and St Croix Legend Elite etc. etc.

They may be worth the money because of what they are composed of, but buying a rod for 400$ is INSANE imo and totally unnecessary. But if it makes you happy, then Im happy for you.

I just realized Barlows is literally 30 min from my house. I service that area of the metroplex for work, pass by it 5-10 times a week. Holy crap.

I have fished inexpensive rods and high end rods. There is a difference I believe in the feel and the action of the rod.I buy middle of the road 80-100 combos that I find on sale. However, I can't think a bass can tell between a original Senko and a spin off.

For me, it's more a matter of availability. The ONLY place within 50 miles that sells any tackle is Wal-Mart, and their selection is limited, to put it mildly. The bulk plastics that I buy from Barlow's are proven winners. Proven by me, the most reliable source that I know. Plus, I don't exactly have an unlimited fishing budget, so saving a few dollars here and there is important to me.

Update on my order from fishingtackleoutlet.com. I received it today and it was a mess. I got doubles of some stuff and none of a couple others that I ordered. I ordered a TON of stuff so it may have been lost in the shuffle of trying to fill the order.I sent them a email and am curious as to how they will handle it. I am not saying DON'T order from them, all I am saying is be sure to check your invoice against what was received.

Man, I think I come close to that in Fat Ika's alone.

I agree. I've used the generics and on occassion I still do, but over the years I've found more times than not, nothing beats the real deal. The key to not breaking the bank is to plan ahead. I start looking at what I've used around the end of August and then I wait for the major sales, which always materialize like clockwork. Restocking during  a 15-20% sale can really take the bite out of the bait monkey. My favorite name brand worm ends up costing me 17 cents, creature 47 cents etc. That's affordable fishing in my book.
