My nearly brand new Diawa AIRD reel developed a bad grind after a few outings so I went back to BPS to exchange it for a different reel. The consensus seems to be (and I've already bought one) that the BPS PQ is a great reel for the money, especially on sale at $79.00

However, I was made an exceptional deal on a Quantum KVD 101 HPT and pulled the trigger on that one. It seems like a great reel and although I know from reading here and my brief experience the PQ is excellent for the price, was getting the Quantum the smart decision?

Thanks for your help.

I'm scared of Quantum reels, but that's just me. The reel you got has outstanding reviews though. If you're happy with it and have faith that it will last you, then that's all that matters.

I can't comment on the Quantum as I have never held or used one, but if it doesn't fit what you need and you take it back, the PQ is a sure fire bet!

As long as you are happy with it that is all that matters.

I'm not just scared of the cheaper Quantum reels, I'm also scared of the higher end stuff like the EXO that I really thought hard about getting. Quantum sponsors some of the biggest names in the sport though, so Qs can't be that bad as I'm sure these guys wouldn't lend their name to junk. Maybe I'm naive though.

I like the way it feels in the hand and it seems smooth (all reels are smooth when new) I just don't have the experience to pick out the little nuances. It's seems like a real nice reel and I'm happy with how it looks and feels in the hand (if that counts for anything) so now it's time to go fish it.

I just got a Quantum Accurist for $30. Saved about $60. It had good reviews but people on here have ripped it. I got it because it is super smooth and it fits my hands really well. I am hoping that it lasts. Feels great now. Anyway, I think it would probably be ok. I have had some issues with some bass pro reels, so I get nervous around those. Both have a 1 year warrenty. I think you will be fine.

Dude you made an excellent choice!!I have that same reel on a St. Croix Rage rod & its the best combo I own. My PB came on it (6.53), and I broke my clubs lunker record with it (5.13). I Absolutely love the performance and the looks are second to none! YOU DID NOT MAKE A MISTAKE...

If you got the reel that you absolutely wanted, don't bother getting buyers remorse or questioning whether or not you made a good decision.  I use Quantums and love'em.   I will say though, that if you're not used to the ACS braking.......practice, practice, practice........as they take a little getting used to since you cannot make incremental braking adjustments as you would be able to with the Daiwa.  I own and use both Quantum and Daiwa and feel that they are on par with other reels.

Can I ask why? I have an energy that's is twenty years old and still works great though I no longer use it. I have a smoke that currently use and is a fantastic reel.

I fish mostly Shimano reels but I have the KVD Signature series reel and I have a Smoke. The Smoke reel is an excellent reel and has served me well.  The KVD is ok...it hasn't let me down yet after two seasons.  The reel has dual braking which I'm not really a fan of.  I think if you maintain your reels properly that you will be just fine. If you treat your stuff like garbage...that is exactly what it will turn into.

Like mentioned above, as long as you're happy it really doesn't matter. Quantum reels take a lot of flak here but everyone that I've ever owned has served me well.  I'm either lucky or they just have a bad rep.

Nothing wrong with Quantum. I had a pair of Accurist 501Pt's that I ABUSED for years, and were still going strong when I sold them. When I began switching over to Shimano, those Quantum's were the last non-Shimano reels to go. I liked them better than any Daiwa I had (Fuego, Tierra, Advantage, Procaster) and any Abu (1st gen. Revo S-L's, SX's and STX's)

Thanks everyone.

Like all of you I work hard for my money and don't want to buy crap. Although I have a great mechanical aptitude I don't want to have to start tweaking and tuning a brand new reel.

I've heard many of you say there is a lot of parody among the good reels but am still a little gun shy to get a "lemon"; or to understand the differences a carbon fiber body vs. a aluminum body for a novice as myself.

Thanks again for your thoughts, this is a great site.

You'll be fine. While I am moving away from Quantum, I still have 2 Accurists in service, and they work. I just prefer my new Daiwa Lexa and use it far more than my Accurists.

You should get many good years out of the Quantum.

No need to have buyer's remorse unless the reel doesn't work out. Some people will have better luck with one model of a reel than others.  I remembered the nickname "Penn Craptiva" for the Penn Captiva reels, but one of my buddies still fishes it to this day and has had no problems.

I own a Nitrous & thats a $40 reel that has served me well for 3 years of hardcore fishing. I also own 2 codes, a smoke, an HPT TE, and the KVD , I've never had a problem with any of them.

I also love my Diawas, Wright McGill, Abu Garcias, &  Shimanos. I think a lot of it has to do with how a person maintains their reels. I rinse mine off after every use, keep them lubed & serviced, & I keep them up on wall racks when not in use.

I'm not saying that there aren't reels that are lemons, I've had a few come out of the package as garbage. I've also had reels go on me that had to do with my own carelessness...(dropping them in sand, not lubing them properly, not tuning them properly)
