airborne_angler Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 Was just reading the post about Hula Popper on a Dropshot...then a thought occured to me...what about a Hula Popper/Pop-r on a C-rig? How many of us have cast a popper and had the wind catch it and take it off target. What do you do? Bring it in quickly so you can recast. Watch that Popper under the surface...it wants to be on top, floating. The cupped face catches water and creates a drag which makes the bait move in an erratic, unpredictable manner. Put that on a C rig and drag it along...hmmm...I wonder... Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted April 5, 2013 Super User Posted April 5, 2013 I know people put crankbaits on C-rigs so why not try a topwater bait. I imagine it would need to be a pretty heavy weight and a stout rod to throw all that weight though. Quote
airborne_angler Posted April 5, 2013 Author Posted April 5, 2013 Well just to see if it would work you could try a small PopR...I'm bettin some large lizards and worms weigh as much, maybe more than that PopR. The PopR has a feathered tail and rattles which might aid in attraction. Quote
HeavyDluxe Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 People will poo-poo the idea until someone tries it and, wonder of wonders, it works. Then people will still poo-poo the idea until there is a witness or witnesses who also start fishing it. And so it spreads. The supposed cognoscenti will still hate it 'til someone wins a tournament with it. Can't hurt to try it... I honestly have no idea/opinion about whether or not it will work. Quote
BassAddict1911 Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 sounds like a good idea, but you'd probably need a heck of alot of wieght to keep that bad boy under the water ... i like the concept though! Quote
airborne_angler Posted April 5, 2013 Author Posted April 5, 2013 so right now I'm kinda really amped up on the Carolina rig. I threw it two weeks ago for the first time in 19 years, and I hooked up on one fish. This week I threw it as well as I got several bites, but no takers...my confidence is building on this technique so this is something im likely to throw this year. Once I feel I'm totally confident with the C rig Ill likely incorporate a popper into the mix. I really can't see a small popper pulling a 1 ounce weight off the bottom. However the popper might float vertically on the pause...suspendots or suspenstrips place accordingly might help...might have to do a small scale mock up in my aquarium. Quote
11justin22 Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 People use to use the small rapala floating minnows all the time....... Quote
