NebraskaBasser Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Anyone have any tips and tactics for pond fishing? I'm going out to a local one tomorrow. Sorry, a little late to the party! I didn't see anybody mention soft or hollow-bodied frogs. I fish a LOT (almost exclusively) farm ponds that are heavily weeded... I use frogs A LOT!! Another favorite of mine are tubes. I usually "modify" them so they float. If the bass/fish are looking for something "smaller", the floating tubes work GREAT! Like others have said, don't feel like you have to spend a fortune on equipment! MOST of my outfits are about $70 TOTAL (each). I didn't read where you've indicated the TYPE or PREFERENCE of the equipment you use... I've had good luck with Pinnacle baitcasting reels (7-13 bearings), and even use some of the "better" spincast reels for the lighter-weight presentations. $35-$40 per reel and $30-$40 for a good (i.e. Berkley Lightning or Cherrywood) rod, and you're good to go! KY Outdoorsman Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I caught my first bass of the season on a 1/8oz black&blue jig believe it or not and it was at a local pond. Here in KY, the temperature is starting to warm up and fish are more active. Normally at a pond, no matter what weather, size or water temp, ill throw a fluke just to experiment. If its colder, ill let it sit longer. If its warm, ill work it faster. Usually for ponds soft plastics are key. Dont forget scum frogs for the lilly pads and grassy areas. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted April 9, 2013 Super User Posted April 9, 2013 7 yards? My kid has two Zebo 33's that cast 20 plus yards and they were like 8 bucks a piece. He catches plenty of 3 plus pound bass on them. Sometimes the little guy out catches me What are you running rod and reel wise? Quote
JellyMan Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Try a Watermelon or Pumpkin Zoom Ultravibe Speed Worm texas rigged weightless on a 4/0 wide gap and use the "Yoyo" technique. Pull bait up in a smooth motion, reel in slack and let it fall. Pull bait up, reel in slack, let it fall. Pull up, let it fall. This works WONDERS for me in ponds! Also get a decent spinning setup for pond fishing. Spinning reel, 8-10lb test, 7' M/F rod. Quote
GoTakeANap Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 you can always get a zebco 33 ($25). you can throw any bait a mile with one of those. While you are using that, save some money up and get you something nice. I know I have to get a better rod and reel but the parentals need convincing because at my age, $70 for a rod and then another $70 for a reel is NOT in my price range lol. Quote
gripnrip Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 I caught my first LM from a pond 25 years ago. I threw a 38 special. It had a blue and yellow skirt and the blades were white with glitter on them. I still have that spinner bait. Anyways. . . . . spinner baits and soft plastics are my go too baits with an occasional shallow running crank thrown in. Don't give up and have fun. 1 Quote

Been a long time since I seen any one mention the old 38 special. Back in my pond walking days, especially when I lived in Florida, the all white one, with the white blades was money. I haven't owned one in years, and to my surprise SK still makes them......hmmm....might be time to re-visit my "roots". Quote
BubbaDirt Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Zebco 33 combo and some beetle spins. How we do in south Ga.. Go get'em and have fun! Quote

Go to Academy & look for a 6'6 medium heavy rod. If you can afford it, get one of the h2o xpress rods. If not, then just get what you can afford. While you are there, get a h2o xpress metle reel. They are $50 & for the money you will not find a better reel. Another option, I bought my wife a rod & reel combo from Academy for $60 or $70. It is a Pflueger Criterion reel on a Berkley Cherrywood rod. It is a good combo. You don't have to spend $140 to be successful at fishing. I have 2 rods that were bought at Academy for $10 on clearance. Quote
halfpint33 Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Have to agree with everybody here.Don't need a high dollar rod/reel combo to be a good fisherman. My 15 yr old daughter started fishing about 5 years ago.She has been using a Zebco 404 reel($15) and a cheap Shakespear rod from WallyWorld. Most days she out fishes me I went pond fishing today and caught a couple decent bass on a black beetle spin.It and shallow crankbaits have been a go to in farm ponds for me since I was a youngin. Scattergun Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 A BIG OLE NIGHTCRAWLER Anyone have any tips and tactics for pond fishing? I'm going out to a local one tomorrow. Quote
hatrix Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 I know everyone has there opinions on baits to buy and what works for them and that is fine. In my experience lots of ponds are loaded with weeds and what not and that greatly limits what you can use unless you are adept at fishing say square bills or traps in weeds. Most likely you would have to order there but pick up some Huddleston grass minnows or weedless shads. Either will work great for you. The minnows probably get more bites but shads probably catch bigger fish on average. They also sell a pflueger president spinning combo at wal-mart for like $80 I think. The reel is a super solid reel that I would still put to use long after I upgraded to a better rod. There is quite a few people on here I am sure who use a president spinning reel with no issues.
