I am thinking about purchasing the Pfluger Supreme XT reel to pair with my St. Croix Premier Spinning 7' rod I am thinking about purchasing.  the reel is fresh/saltwater.  If I paid the same amount for a strictly freshwater reel would it be a more quality reel?  Am I paying for the ability to fish saltwater?

I dont think you are paying anything extra for this reel to be able to fish in saltwater.  It is a very nice reel and would be a good match to a SC Premier rod.

Short answer........NO.

I own 3 supremes not the xt, 1 was used in saltwater for nearly 2 years no issues at all and all of them are about 4 years old and are perfect.  I also own a medalist and an arbor strictly used in saltwater again with no issues and no Pflueger I have ever owned needed any kind of repair or service.  I do own Daiwa, Abu, Shimano, Quantum and Penn all of them have seen the repair shop.  I don't recommend or endorse anything, but this has been my track record.

I have one and it's a fine reel. Very light, good feel, very smooth.

That being said, however, I prefer my Shimano Stradic which is $30 more.

supreme xt is an awesome reel.saltwater reels are generally more corrosion resistant.

There are reels specifically designed for salt water and many or them mirror prices of freshwater reels, they work equally as well in both environments.  One caveat does exist, some of the pure saltwater reels can be a bit heavier than their freshwater counterpart, but not always.

I own the Supreme XT ( I fish freshwater only) and it is a very good reel. Very smooth and a good drag.  I have a Shimano CI4 which I like a little better but it is the next level up in price range.  XT is a very good reel for the price and I would recommend without hesitation.
