Cody Wilson Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 I would like to add this technique to my bass fishing. I have ordered the hooks and the super finesse worms the 7 inch ones. I have Shinmo spinning reel with 7-10 pound test. I fish mostly docks and steep rocky lake points. Mostly this is for the summer when its to hot to fish. I was wondering a rod and good action and length. Under 150 I would like! Quote

Super User kickerfish1 Posted April 3, 2013 Super User Posted April 3, 2013 The 6'9 ML fenwick elite tech smallmouth rod is killer rod for finesse tactics up to 1/4 oz. 1 Quote
Cody Wilson Posted April 3, 2013 Author Posted April 3, 2013 Thanks I be checking them out. I want backbone forsure. Really want for shaky head technique Do I want braid line to Fluro liter? Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted April 3, 2013 Super User Posted April 3, 2013 Thanks I be checking them out. I want backbone forsure. Really want for shaky head technique Do I want braid line to Fluro liter? Yes for spinning I'd probably put on a 10lb braid with a flouro leader. Quote
BassThumb Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Most are going to recommend a ML-powered rod, but you might want to consider an M-power because it's more versatile if you ever choose to toss other lures with it. A 7' M/F is perfect for shakyhead fishing, IMO. Nothing fancy. A flea market Dobyns Champion 703SF will run you about $150, and a sale price rod will be $190-200. I usually use the DX 703SF for shakyhead fishing and I'm very happy with the action and power. Quote

Super User lmbfisherman Posted April 3, 2013 Super User Posted April 3, 2013 What size leader? I don't think it has to be set in stone. I usually make all my leaders around the length of the rod, I'll have extra line on the leader to play with for retying my lure/jig..etc Quote
Super User Raul Posted April 3, 2013 Super User Posted April 3, 2013 I really don´t get it, since when shakey heading is exclusively a light line application ? let´s look again at the description in the question: I fish mostly docks and steep rocky lake points, if it were I fishing docks with a shakey head rigged bait the lightest rod power I would choose for that would be MH and at least 10-12 pound test, in my neck of the woods there aren´t many docks, there´s timber and that´s what I fish with, MH or H rods with 10+ lb test for shakeyheading. Arv Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 I primarily use a Dobyns Chamion 702 for this but if I have something else on there I will throw shakey heads on my 6'6 Shimano Compre. Both are medium power, fast action. Quote
Cody Wilson Posted April 4, 2013 Author Posted April 4, 2013 Thanks for tips really helped out. One last question what are some good jig heads for this setup dont know which heads and weight way to many companies with tons of styles. What line do you use like braid to flouro/ OR STRAIGHT BRAID Quote
Crappiebasser Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 My shakey head spinning rod is a St Croix Avid 68mxf. I use 30 lb braid and change the leader to the conditions. Most of the time I use 10 lb flouro. Quote
JDUB Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 I use a 7'1" medium *** black and really like it 1 Quote
backcast88 Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 I use a 6'6" MF BPS Johnny Morris Signature with the full cork grip. Its a little on the heavier side but since I don't drop shot a lot it doesn't bother me. It is sensitive and I got it on clearance for $60 3 years ago. Quote

Super User clayton86 Posted April 4, 2013 Super User Posted April 4, 2013 I'm using a 6'9" MLF veritas with 20# suffix braid and a 8# trilen 100% flouro leader about 6' worth of a leader. Iv been using Siebert Outdoors shaky heads with a rage baby craw on it. We just got ice out like a week ago and I was getting hits like crazy water was crystal clear I stood there watching em swim up grab the claws and swim off. I absolutely love the set up for shakey heads never used the technique much but it's my nephews go to and he keeps up with me so I added it my arsenal so I can keep my edge lol. 1 Quote
Cody Wilson Posted April 4, 2013 Author Posted April 4, 2013 Its a spinning combo so i believe going with little lighter line the *** rod is the one I believe getting more in my price range. One last question the what knot do people like the most tie the leader on I please send youtube URL! Quote

Cody Wilson Posted April 5, 2013 Author Posted April 5, 2013 So what kind of flouro line do yall recommend? I believe thread to leader be to much work. Please help going to bass pro this week to stock up Quote
Blues19 Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 I have the Daiwa S 6'3" soinning rod. Its a pretty nice rod for shakey head fishing. I also have a 6' bionic blade M rod. I would suggest the bionic blade. pretty awesome rod for very reasonable price Quote
backcast88 Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 So what kind of flouro line do yall recommend? I believe thread to leader be to much work. Please help going to bass pro this week to stock up I like 8# XPS. Pick a reputabel brand like Sunline, Seaguar, XPS, etc. Another rod you might want to check out is the BPS Carbonlite in either a 6'8" M XF or 6'9" ML F. I use the 6'8" M XF for finesse TX rigs with great success. The rod is very lite and sensitive. Plus if I break it within a year they will replace it no questions asked. Quote
cbass12 Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 In your price range I would check out the Shimano Crucial. 1 Quote
TriCityBassin' Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 This is a staple on my deck, never take it off the line. I use 8lb flouro (I personally don't believe in leaders as it is one more knot to fail, personally). Seaguar never lets me down. 7' ML Fenwick is a KILLER rod for this. I also use Shimano Cumara's. You stated that you already ordered the jig heads. If they don't have Gamakatsu or Owner hooks....send them back. I am all about American made, but I have lost sooo many fish on heads not sporting Gami's I can't count. You are not using broomsticks and the hook needs to penetrate quick and easy. If you notice what feels like a solid hookup just come unbuttoned, use better hooks. If you are not one for the finesse side of things you can use a medium rod but definitely look to something in the Fast to X-Fast action, quick to backbone. Fenwick Elite Tech Fenwick HMX 7' ML xFast Shimano Clarus or Cumara 1 Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted April 6, 2013 Super User Posted April 6, 2013 I love shakey head fishing in the summer. My rod is well above your price range i'm partial to a 69mlxf rod. for line I use 10/2 832 /w a 7# sunline fluoro leader or sometimes straight fluoro in the same test. Heads I use 1/8 and 3/16 almost always and occasionally 1/4oz if the wind is brutal. I like secret lures wide gap and SK football heads. 1 Quote
