LTownFisher764 Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 I went to the Jersey Paddler Paddling show in New Jersey and after looking at what seemed to be an endless amount of kayaks and canoes I finally made a decision and bought a mango Native Slayer 12. I went there really wanting to get a good look at the Native Ultimate and the Jackson Cuda but the Slayer seemed to have features that I liked from both kayaks all rolled into 1. I love the high/low seating. I like the amount of room I have around my legs but there is plenty of space and bungees to add tackle boxes, plano's and whatever else I may need on the water. It comes with recessed groove tracks almost up and down the kayak for easy customization. I also bought a very nice roof rack for my Toyota 4runner, a MTI voyager PFD which feels perfect with the high/low seat in the Slayer, and a Werner carbon fiber paddle. Unforunately I had to order the paddle in the length that I needed so hopefully it will show up sometimes this week so I can take this bad boy out for it's maiden voyage next weekend. Quote

Super User Darren. Posted March 31, 2013 Super User Posted March 31, 2013 Oh, and you'll LOVE the First Class seat. I see you've got the mounts to sit low or high, that's a fantastic feature. I had to build a riser for mine. But it's still an incredibly comfy seat. You'll have some awesome memories in that yak. And may you have an extremely productive year bass fishing from it! Quote

Also Native is coming out with hatch covers and extra scupper plugs to seal them off if need be. Also a good option the Native rep gave me. Use the bow space as a cooler and when your day is done pull the scupper plug to drain. Quote

aceman387 Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Congrats on your new boat.I bought my first kayak last spring (ride 115) and found the kayak experience so relaxing and rewarding,its like meditation being out on it on the water. You can expect bigger fish totals for the upcoming year because kayaks are quiet and stealthy,no boat motor or trolling motors to spook the bass.I have bass and turtles swim up from the bottom of the lake to come up and check me out all the time,they swim up and stare at my yak trying to figure out what the heck it is,they must think its a floating log,I should mention if your married you should pre warn your wife to expect to see less of you this coming year lol .I bring a thermos of coffee,jug of water and some sandwiches and stay out all day. They convinced me to get a high vis color in case I'm on any larger bodys of water so I can be more easily seen. Luckily most of the lake around me are either electric or self powered only lakes. I must say though the orange is growing on me. I'm still waiting for my paddle to come in the mail. I'm hoping to take it out for the first time this weekend. Quote

I was being blown around like a rag doll. I took one rod out with me and was throwing a senko around a little bit but no fish. I was only out for about 1.5 hours. I'll be taking it back out this weekend. Hopefully the wind cooperates so I can get more comfortable in the yak. Quote

The wind always presents a challenge, but just wait until you take it out when the water is smooth as glass...you're in for some good times in that yak. You're going to find that getting up close to those bass without spooking them is going to become a whole lot easier too. I can still remember the first time I set the hook on a 5lb+ bass and it turned my yak around 180 degrees...what a blast! Welcome to the world of kayak bass fishiing! Quote
