Capt.Bob Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 For the past week I been getting a "reel" work out (pun intended) tearing up the Walleye and filling the freezer. This is grocery time off of Lake Erie. Fish to 8 lbs. and limits every day of 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 pounders are making the drive to Toledo a habit for the next 5 to 6 weeks. I have done this for 39 years now, and hope I get to for another 39 years. It is common to catch 20 to 50 a day, and choose the 4 you want to take home with you. The really big fish have not pulled yet but their are 12 to 14 pounders caught every year. These big girls are fun to catch, and very dificult to get in with the size terminal tackle you are allowed to use this time of year where we are. the river is not bad right now as it is still in it's banks, but still running extremely fast, as it is the largest tributary in all the great lakes. It can also be very dangerous and fisherman are lost every year wading in this treturous water, and near freezing temps, 36 degree water temp Monday morning, if you go down in it in heavy currents where most fish are, you don't have long to get out or hypothermia sets in. But after you learn it, and experience the fight with light takle these turbid waters offer and the numbers of fish available, it's hard to want to do anything else while their running the river. The best part is their the best eating freshwater fish available. This was Monday morning and what I try to bring home every day, 22 to 23 inch would be my ideal keeper but they just started in so this was yeasterdays catch. I won't fish the holiday weekend, just to many idiots out their and it will be shoulder to shoulder. This will be the last week when it is this peacefull, the word is out and the crowds are comming! My Good Friday catch. 24 inches to 19, the 19 inch fish on the right was a Sauger, about the same as a Walley but they are usually a little thicker and deeper profile but eat as good. They are few and far between but always nice to pick up something different when catching so many Walleye! Quote
