Anybody heard of running a brand new spool under hot water for a few minutes to reduce line memory which reduce line twist?

If you are having problems with line twists I would suggest any, or all of the following:

1.  Make sure the spool is position correctly when putting line on your reel.  This is particularly important with spinning reels

2.  You can get a large phone book and have the line run through the middle of the phone book as you put it on you reel

3.  Consider using a spray on line conditioner

i suggest you use braid and get rid of the poroblem.or u could start with heating up the line in warm water and spooling it on.next is spool it the right direction.ifyoudontdothisnothingwillworkuse the limpest line u can.after that tie it to pole letout the line and strech it.respool it and sprsy kvd line conditiolner.apply kvd before each fising tripr and let sit overnight...periodically untie line and let it out behind boat with no lure attached and troll.thyis takes twist out.also close bail byhand.

In my opinion soaking in hot water softens the line a bit but does nothing regarding twist. In my experience twist when installing line is no problem with a bait caster but can be a major issue with soinning or spin cast gear. The other and I think a major twist issue is cranking while the drag slips. To get a feel for this loosen your dran and crank a shoretr time with the drag slipping. You will have mega twists. I eliminated this years ago by back reeling with my spinning rigs when I needed to give a fish some line.

To fill a spinning rig I run the line through the rod guides, put the spool of new line on the floor label side up. Crank a few times and put some slack in the line. If there is no twist finish filling the reel spool (leave about 1/8 inch below the reel spool lip). Keep enough pressure on the line for a good tight fill but was less the you have the drag set.

Three reasons for spinning/spincast line twist:

1. Line installed with twist. Solution put it on correctly to start.

2. Cranking with the drag slipping. Solution just don't do it. This can be hard with a fish on. Learn to back reel.

3. Lure that spins during the retrieve. For plastics bake sure it's rigged straight. Lures that spins like inline spinners-I use a swivel.

ALL spinning reels will twist line. It happens because the line is pulled off the spool one way and wound back on another. If you've ever used a garden hose or an extension cord, you can see how easy it is to get them twisted without spinning the end of the cord. Baitcasters don't twist the line because the line comes back on the spool exactly the same way it went off. Mono / fluoro lines resist twist like a garden hose and want to unwind like a coiled spring after being twisted. Braided lines will twist also but hold the twist and don't show the ill effects as quickly. When braided lines get twisted too much it starts wrapping itself around your rod tip. Spooling properly means the line won't be twisted when you put it on. Repeated casting puts twist in the line. Large arbor spools slow down the amount of twist added to the line because of fewer wraps around the spool.  In-line spinners won't add extra twist if the lure is working properly. The blade is supposed to spin, not the lure.  You can get rid of line twist (temporarily) but cutting off your lure and letting the line trail out behind your boat while moving slowly. Let out a little more than line than the amount that comes off while casting. Pinch the line between your fingers as you reel in and the twist will go out, until you start casting again!

A fourth reason is the reel itself. Some reels induce twist and over the years that has been my biggest reason for twist. I'm guessing that I've owned perhaps 25 spinning reels and 4-5 of them have induced twist. I could find no solution other than to not use those reels.

I've tried that. It didn't work as well as I though it would.

The best way to untwist fishing line is to drag it behind a boat at idle speed for 5 minutes+, with nothing tied on, of course.

This can also be done while standing in a river or stream by facing downstream and just letting the current take the line.

Standard operating procedure.  I'll put liquid fabric softener in the warm water for about 10 minutes.

As mentioned line twist and conditioning your line to make it more supple are entirely 2 different issues.  Conditioning your line is a good way to eliminate coiling, I would not use too thick of a line either on spinning gear.  Once my line is loaded I troll the line out before I fish, the line is perfect then.

The act of line being wrapped a fixed spinning spool will create line twist, as opposed to the physics of a b/c.  That is not the only reason for line twist in spinning gear (can happen with b/c gear too) would be the type of bait being used such as in line spinners, spoons that rotate and plastic flukes if they are turning over, try and keep the hooked centered.  Barrel and crane swivels do not turn much in water, IMO they are nothing but line connectors.  BB swivels are somewhat better, but nothing beats a ball chain swivel, I do not believe they are that conducive for bass fishing, although when fishing other techniques and lure types for different species they have been super.

Every one of my spinning reels whether they be used in fresh or salt has line twist, braid twists too.  I have never had any luck trolling out braid the way mono trolls out.  I have Supercast on 2 rigs, the twist has been greatly reduced with that line, but after a few weeks I'm getting ready try and see if this new type of braid will troll out, don't know yet I may do it today.

Just watched the current Jarrett Edwards Outdoors and he showed a little trick on line twist. He basically pulled out some line and showed how the line gets line twist when a fish is pulling drag (the drag causes the line to get hot). Then said by allowing your reel to back reel instead of using your drag will help eliminate the problem. Of course u need to fill your spool the right way. Haven't tried it, but u might check it out.

Don't catch a fish for few days with an inline spinner, you'll have line twist.
