I am just looking for a pretty cheap Trout Ultralight setup...something I can pick up from Walmart or Big 5 since that is what I have up here at college. Most the trout we catch up here are very small stocked trout. I have an Ugly Stick Light Medium action pole sitting around that I don't know what to use for, but its too heavy for trout.

I think they sell Shakesphere UL and L spinning rods and you can get them from 5'6-7' in length.

You can also find serveral value priced 1000 sized spinning reels.

The Ugly Stik Lite M is a tad heavy considering UL to L is common for trout. If you like the US Lite, they make UL models, too. Pair a UL up with a 500, 750, or at the heaviest a 1000 size (which I use for bass).

For the ~$40 an Ugly Stik Lite would cost you, other, more sensitive rods are available. And you will find several rods at Walmart which could also fit the bill, including the Trout Ultralight setup you mention. Probably a fine start for someone on a budget.

They should have some decent UL combos for under $50.

I used a quantum xtralite 6'6" UL (longest rod) and a shimano sienna 1000 I picked up at walmart, totaled around $50.

Don't think you can get the sienna at wally anymore though, but an Abu should work too.

I've seen berkley make UL rods at cabelas designed for throwing eggs, they have a moderate action and long lengths for around $30, don't know where else you could get them but keep your eye out

IMHO, a Berkeley Cherrywood or Lightning UL rod paired with a Pflueger Trion XL would be a nice, but not ridiculously priced combination.  Our Wally World just had the Cherrywoods on sale.

The upside is that it's a rig you can also use for smaller fish (panfish / perch) in between hauling bass out of your favorite body of water.
