Hey everyone first post on here. Im looking to get a rod and reel for just crankbaits since I fish them about 80% of the time. I am in college so I do have a budget on what I can afford. I mostly throw KVD square bills 1.5s, DT6's, DT10's, and red eyes. I'm thinkin about gettin a reel in a 5.4.1. and a 6'6 rod. What yall reccomend?

Whats your budget? I have one all around cranking set up since I also am on a budget. I have a Phenix composite-x x12 with an abu garcia revo stx that I will probably upgrade to a shimano chronarch 200e5. This works great for all my crank baits, even dd22's.

I recommend the crankin stick trigger Basspro in a 7ft length and its on sale for $59. Its unidirectional graphite and has a good grip with the power hump handle. If you want a glass rod, which is recommended, then get a kvd glass rod 7ft on sale $79 or a cheap ugly stick glass rod. I personally feel if your in a float tube or kayak 7ft (easy to use sitting down), if in a boat or bank 7'6" to launch them far.

For reels I use the 5.4:1 Shimano Curado 200e5 with fluorocarbon or mono. These can be bought used on ebay for like 100-130. If you rather buy new then i would check out the Abu Garcia Revo3 Winch on ebay for like $150-$160. Its like a 5.4:1 reel.........torquey slow rolling reel that could drag out a engine block......j/p but it can handle alot with a 20+lbs drag system.

Budget will really determine where to go with suggestions. I'll tell you I love my Powell Endurance CB. Its the 6'9 MH/H.

If you are on a college budget like most college kids I know you can have a nice set up with the BPS Cranking stick and one of their Pro Qualifier reels that go down to 4.7:1. You will have about $140 in the whole set up while those items are on sale.

If i had one cranking rod to cover all depths and one reel it would be something in the middle.

Reels, i like to work my squarebills a bit faster than my med/deep and deep divers. And i like a faster reel with my lipless cranks. You didnt mention that you like to throw realy deep divers like 16-25 so the power to get the bait down10lbsa. and less IPT may not be needed since most of what you described is less than 6' depth. (Except for the 10'that divers you discribed) i would go for a 6.3:1 reel for now and later buy a 5.4 -4.7 for deep divers when you budget permits. As for the 10' divers, just make sure you get a long cast, slow down a bit and you can use line size to help with the diving depth.

Rods - i personally use a Powell 6'9 length rod for shallow squarebills. Because mostt of the time its not a super long cast, rather a shorter more accurate cast. 6'9 makes that easier. But since you are looking at also throwing 10' divers and lipless cranks, i would look for something a little longer to give you a longer cast. 7'-7'3 is a good range and you still will be able to get an accurate cast.

As for rod power, id go with a MH because of the ise of shallow squarebills and Lipless cranks alot of the time are in and around some type of thick cover. This is also good if you decide to throw a Deep diver.

I dont know your budget, or what you plan to spend on each item. But there were suggestions above for the BPS Crankin sticks and Pro Qualifier reels aznd i think that is a good start.

For squarebills and lipless cranks i use Powell 695 and Lews Tournamnet Pro 641

Thanks guys for the responses. I really cant afford know more than a 175 dollar setup. I pretty much decided last week that I was going to get the BPS crankin stick, and from what yall saying it sounds like the right choice for me right now. From what I read and from what yall said sounds like instead of the 6'6 I need to get the 7' MH.

As for the reel, this is where I cant decide. I really like the revo winch but its out of my price range unless I can win a bid on ebay for a good deal. I have also been lookin hard at the lews speed spoil and see it has some very good reviews and I like the curado too. Just cant decide which one to get.

The Pro Qualifier reel would be an excellent match for the Crankin' Stick. I have 2 Crankin' Sticks, each paired with a 5.3:1 PQ.

And I think the PQ's are on sale for $79 right now.

Look on E Bay for the Lews Tournament Speed Spool. Not the Tournment MG.. you should be able to find one for 120.

Also, Rippin Lips (adam) has a seller that you can get Lews BB1 for 110. Thats if the seller still has any. Send adam a pm for the info and im sure he'll send you a message back soon.

The Tournament speed spool is about 20 bucks more than the MG and has dual brakes and is a great reel. I dont have a BB1 yet, (due to spending that money on boat repairs, but they are being touted as great crankin reels)

Hope all that helps.

I will definitely look into what y'all are saying. Again thanks for the responses everyone. Fish, Pray, Love, you seem to really know what your talking about and both of your comments really helped. Thanks

If your on a budget and want a nice rod, go with the powell diesel 7' glass cranking rod. Its 69.99 or you can find it for 49.99 i believe on thefishranger.com not sure if it still on sale though. But that would be anawesome rod for you. They dont have a warranty but are tough, and one hellva rod for 70$

I didnt even think of the Powell Diesel. I dont own one, but i own serveral Powell Endurance and Max rods and Powell is a darned good rod company. Thats another good option. Especially if you can find one for 50.

Thanks for your kind words

None of those baits pull hard, if it were me I would get a 6:1 reel. I have a 5.0:1 Shimano Curado DPV, and it's too slow. It's great for big, deep diving cranks like a 6xd, but after a day of burning them on a slow reel, it feels like my arm is going to fall off. It's much easier to slow a fast reel down, than speed a slow one up. For that very reason I went with a 6.2:1 reel on my cranking rod that throws my lipless cranks, squarebills, and baits that dive less than 10', and use the slow reel on the 10'+ diving baits.

Frickin' Exactly! ^^^^^^^^^^

You don't want or need a 5:1 reel for squarebills, under 10' and lipless cranks.
