Backwoodsbasser Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 Like most of you all I've been breakin out the rods oilling up the reels and stocking up at bps dicks and northeastern bass supp in prep for the season. What are cold water/ pre spawn faves you guys use. Where do you target, coves and bays or feeder creeks? Maybe the Merrimack back waters?? Also who here has the kvd Plano PTO Elite tackle bag? Bass pro has it makes down from 89/59 for 3750 and 79-49 for 3650. Is there much of a difference in size? Quote
Super User Shane J Posted March 29, 2013 Super User Posted March 29, 2013 Jigs. I'll be stuck with a jig rod in my hand, from ice out, till the end of May. Probably all I will use, and I'll catch some monsters doing it. Can't help on that bag, but I don't think you'd ever regret having more space in the 3700 size. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted March 29, 2013 Super User Posted March 29, 2013 Shane, for now, what type of jig? football? dragged slowly?up points, from shallow casting deep? Quote
je1946 Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 I'm going to try some things that used to work for me yrs ago, don't know why I got away from them, slow drag a Kalins grub, same with a tube, used to be killer, and I'm going to catch a fish on a blade bait if it kills me, was talking to a guy yesteday about using a keitech fat rigged on am underspin he says to fish it just fast enough to get the blade to turn, according to him it's a killer cold water rig, and of course as Shane stated jig works for me. Just a couple more weeks for the Quabbin. praying for a couple of warm, windy rainy days. Quote
Backwoodsbasser Posted March 29, 2013 Author Posted March 29, 2013 Where are you guys fishing I know one of you said the quabbin I really want to I've that place a shot I have tons of mapping software to find submerged roadbeds and d foundations. Shane have you hit the Merrimack yet? I'm planning on giving it a shot this weekend just south of Manchester. Maybe goffs falls. I always have luck tere tons of walleyed too. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted March 29, 2013 Super User Posted March 29, 2013 No, not recently. And Deaknh03, a brush jig, big 3/4oz, Green Pumpkin color head, Blue Craw color skirt, Falcon Lake Craw Rage Craw trailer. Stay deep of where you want to fish, then cast shallow to find your humps and ledges, then slowly drag the jig down, into the drop offs, wait for monster bass to kill it. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted March 29, 2013 Super User Posted March 29, 2013 I saw 2 boats on Canobie today! Quote
mhtranger Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 93 side still has a bunch of ice on it. Drove by Stumpfield Marsh today on my way skiing and it was still covered in ice. Quote

nhbassin Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 Went in Medford Mass today with my roomate. I got 2 pickerel on a rage craw and he caught a 2 pound 15 ounce largemouth on a lipless crankbait. Cant wait until all the NH lakes are opened up. Quote
CyRaX Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 I'm gonna go down to the Merrimack tomorrow since its a nice 5 minute walk down the hill from my house. First outting of the season and its suppose to be nice out. Quote
checkyoursix Posted March 30, 2013 Posted March 30, 2013 Got this girl in medford yesterday with nhbassin on a lipless crankbait. She hit it about 4 feet from the bank. 1 Quote
Backwoodsbasser Posted March 30, 2013 Author Posted March 30, 2013 Was that Medford bass caught at the mystic lakes? I've caught some whales there even in the cold water season the depth and dam make that lake productive year round Quote
Super User Shane J Posted March 30, 2013 Super User Posted March 30, 2013 Nice, man! Way to get it goin'! Quote
BronzeChaser Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 I'm a little ways north in Maine, but the ice is just about gone and I've been eagerly waiting. I start with jigs, jerkbaits, and super slow rolling spinnerbaits. Targeting mostly steep main lake banks, points, and bluffs. Along with deeper submerged grass. Most guys wont even think of a spinnerbait when it's really cold, but I've whacked 'em crawling one along the bottom on some nasty days 2 Quote
checkyoursix Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 I never started this early in the season before so I asked a few more experienced cold water anglers. They all advised jigs, craws, anything really slow. Nothing worked. So I started going back to what I knew better. As soon as I tried on crankbaits, swimbaits and spinners I started catching fish. They're not hitting worms yet but my roommate gets at least 2 fish on a rage craw everytime he's been out. You just got to find what they want. 1 Quote
cdaggett Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 Yesterday a guy was casting a black and blue jig with a dark blue trailer and was dragging and popping it on the bottom and caught three nice ones within 15 minutes that I talked to him. He was pretty much blind casting it out into the open and retrieving it. If only I could catch em that easy. BTW here in Maine the water is freaking cold.... like mid 30's 1 Quote
BronzeChaser Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 I've found it pretty surprising how active fish can be in really cold water. I believe it's especially true for the bass in these far northern states because they're somewhat used to living in cold water, a lot like the people here are used to cold air temps. A couple seasons ago I caught my first one of the season cranking a shallow ledge off the side of a point in about 6 feet of water. The water was in the 30's and it was almost a 5 pound fish 1 Quote
