Capability Of Hds-5...questions

I have an HDS-5 Gen 1 on my boat currently using the standard transducer that came with the unit. I bought the unit when the HDS line first came out several years ago and structure scan/down imaging was not available on anything. I was under the impression at the time that the units would later be able to support structure scan with the purchase of a different transducer. I don't know if that understanding was correct or not. Here are my questions:

 

Will my HDS-5 gen 1 support structure scan and/or down imaging at all?

 

If so, what do I need to purchase/do to make that possible?

 

Last, if possible with the purchase of a different transducer, is that transducer going to be a transom mount or does it have to be thru-hull?

Yes you can get SS and Downscan with your HDS 5 gen 1 all you have to buy is an LSS-2 unit, which they currently have a rebate on.  I have 2 HDS 5's (Gen 1 and 2) networked together through the LSS-2.  I would love to have an HDS 10 but it works just fine with the 5's.

Thanks for the response. Even with the rebate, dang that's an expensive transducer. Maybe I'll just buy the new 7 HDI which comes with the transducer, move the HDS-5 to the bow and not worry about having SS/DSI up there. Thanks!

I just bought the LSS-2 last month because of the rebate and doing a little shopping I ended up getting it for less than $400 when its all said and done.

I might add its more than just a transducer.  The box allows you to network your units together so they can share waypoints, transducers, etc.

My buddy has an HDS5 with the LSS. Di is excellent but IMO the screen is just too small for the Side imaging to be of much use. He just added an HDS8 and that is really impressive. Much better than my Humminbird 898c si.
