solo_bro Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 Hey fellas i'm looking for a place to buy blank spools in 300 yd and 1000 yd for spooling surplus lines and such. I'm surprised I cannot find any, can someone help me out or just send me all our blank spools. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 28, 2013 Super User Posted March 28, 2013 Are you jut being silly? "Surplus line" stays on the spool it came on or is reattached to some other spool. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 28, 2013 Super User Posted March 28, 2013 I just use big, old trolling reels. Quote

BrettD Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 Search empty spools on ebay they have every shape and size you could ever want. Quote
solo_bro Posted March 28, 2013 Author Posted March 28, 2013 Surplus line as in used fishing line. Sometimes I spool line for just a few outings and switch up. I rather put it on a backup spool and mark it used. Quote

Koofy Smacker Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 I asked for places to buy spools not your personal comments. Never understood getting personal right off the bat.. In all seriousness, ask your buddies, save old smaller spools, or go to a sporting goods store and ask them. I know we run through spools all the time but they just get tossed when we are done with them. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted March 28, 2013 Super User Posted March 28, 2013 It's easier just getting an older "junk" reel with a deep spool. Check ebay. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted March 28, 2013 Super User Posted March 28, 2013 Buy some PVC and cut it up into pieces....wrap it around that and rubber band it to secure it. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 28, 2013 Super User Posted March 28, 2013 You can't just wrap it, you have to reel it up, by spinning the spool. Otherwise, you'll introduce tons of line twist. 1 Quote
solo_bro Posted March 28, 2013 Author Posted March 28, 2013 Yeh I use a power drill attachment (invention) to strip my reels line back onto spools. Surprising is I didn't see any empty spools on eBay. Quote
PondBoss Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 I asked for places to buy spools not your personal comments. You'll get used to it, some of the moderators like to run their mouths. You'll learn to ignore it. 2 Quote

Actually you can just wrap it on to an empty spool and there will be zero line twist. All of the line twist that is generated by hand spooling will be eliminated at the end of the line when you an attach it from the reel. That being said, it takes a longer than needed to do it that way. What I have done is put a spool on a bolt and tighten a nut down insert the bolt into a drill and it's done in no time. Quote

I found a bunch when I looked they might not be fishing line specific but a spool is a spool. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313&_nkw=empty+spools&_sacat=0&_from=R40 Quote
solo_bro Posted March 28, 2013 Author Posted March 28, 2013 Thanks, yeh I did want fishing spools to fit inside my Plano spool boxes but anything can work for now. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 28, 2013 Super User Posted March 28, 2013 Pondboss, why would you want to twist your line in the first place? Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted March 29, 2013 Super User Posted March 29, 2013 You can't just wrap it, you have to reel it up, by spinning the spool. Otherwise, you'll introduce tons of line twist. If you taped it down and reverse rolled it, it should work. Either way it'd be off the spool. Quote
Solution ClackerBuzz Posted March 29, 2013 Solution Posted March 29, 2013 spent toilet paper rolls. get one every 2-3 weeks (or every 2-3 days if you live with a woman). honestly you won't have surplus line being moved around the more you fish. you'll get better organize, understand ur rod/reel combos, and dedicate them for specific purposes. you'll only add line Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 btw welcome to the forums. there is no such thing as a stupid question...even if some people here try to make you feel that way. lots of guys are here to help, share knowledge and even hit the water with ya Quote
solo_bro Posted March 29, 2013 Author Posted March 29, 2013 Thanx i appreciate al the help, that toliet paper roll works wonders and its free. Clackerbuzz was right about women and toliet paper, its like clock work. Quote

That's terrible advice. Your line will be incredibly twisted if you intend to use it again, it will not come out when you detach from the spool. Every revolution will have added one turn of line as it sits on the spool. Quote
