Going For Broke!

I don't fish tournaments, but this one kinda intrigues me. A friend of mine asked me to partner up at Pickwick

for a "Big Bass Tournament". $190 entry per boat, $600 Big Bass payout per hour, $6000 for the biggest bass.

It's probably going to take 6-8 lbs per hour and 10+ to win the "big bass" prize. No points for 5lb dinks!

 

Luckly I know the newly crowned Mr. Monster Bass, OO Mod here in Memphis. After consulting with him this

morning, this is the strateg we came up with. Three rigs only:  Hud, The Rig and Scrounger/ 7" Fluke.  If you

have any other suggestions, please post them up.

Please report back after your competition, Ive been wanting to try the Oakley Big Bass Tourneys. It would be interesting to have your input on how its run, how you like the format, some of the challenges versus a reg tournament, and any other opinions or input.

Not familiar with that lake, but a big jig and your favorite trailer have always been big bass catchers for me on any lake.

You'd be surprised what doesn't get weighed in...  It's always a gamble to leave your spot, and weigh in an hourly lunker.  Early in the day, many don't weigh in.

How you could not have a jig in that lineup is beyond me

 

I would designate two rods for each guy. 4 rigs, hud/rig one one guy, fluke/jig the other.

I would be prefishing, and setting no limits to what I'd throw.

Just don't stay with the rig to long it'll cost you if you don't improvise I just fished the big bass splash on gville and should have left the rig bite at ten the first day.I didn't. Day two I did and what I learned was I was wrong on day one and I knew it.

Caught a ton of fish, but only little bass. Best two were 3.49 and 5.71. The 3.49 paid $100 for

the Wild Card in the second round. Big Bass ($6,000) was 7.9 which really surprised me. I guess

it was just one of those days when the big bass couldn't be found or just wouldn't play.

With as much as you post that link to Davey Hite winning with the Berkley Hollow Belly, I'm surprised you didn't fish that.

 

What did you catch your fish on? Any idea what the big fish was caught on?

I threw swimbaits and some other stuff, but everything was caught on jerkbaits in my boat.

The big fish each hour and the Grand Prize for the tournament were caught on The Rig.
