With owning and fishing only 7:1gear ratio bait casters, will i notice a big difference in using a 6:4:1 gear ratio?  Is a 6:4:1 gear ratio suitable to use for trig/jigs/swimjigs/worms and even pitching?
I would prefer 7:1, but the reel i am getting is only available in 6:4:1 for LH.

I think the reel spec you need to pay attention to is the IPT (inches per turn) or lure retrieval rate with each crank of the handle.

That ratio is a good all around ratio. Does good for all application. Are there advantages with higher or lower sometimes, yes but you do fine with it.

Up until the last few years a 6.4:1 ratio with a 26"-28" inch per turn of the handle (IPT) was a very fast reel. For me the only time a faster reel is preferable is when I want the bait back to the boat quickly to make another pitch to my targeted area. I have a couple of 7.0:1 reels, but most of my reels are 6.4:1 and I use them effectively with all styles of fishing.

6.4:1 GR is a good all around gear ratio for most all techniques IMO except cranking (anything above 5.1:1).

6.2:1 - 6.4:1 was the common gr until the super high speeds took over for turning heads quickly...

tight lines!   :fishing1:

What is more important to look at is Inches Per Turn or IPT.

I agree with the other members that 6.4:1 is the most versatile of the Gear Ratios concerning the main three are 5.X:1, 6.X:1, 7.X:1

6.4:1 will have more torque than a 7:1 gear ratio. Nontheless, there won't be a large difference especially if the IPT's are within a few inches of each other.

I own one 7.1 and mostly 6.2 and 6.4 reels, I won't be buying more 7.1's. I like the reel and it works for most stuff -MOST- I don't care for it for cranking, not even shallow or traps, I prefer the 6.4 for that, and would use a 5.1 if I had it, I use the 6.4 for everything and even though the 5.1 works better for cranking and especially deep cranking, I don't do enough to warrant just one reel as  the 6.4 does work for everything as others have said, look at it like this, if you could only own one reel for everything - mine would be a 6.4, you will have no trouble regardless of what you are going to use it for!

I use 6.3-6.4 for everything but my flippin rod and worm rod. I like to use 7:1 for them.
