Mike Z Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Having read quite a few of the posts stickied or referenced about the Senkos, I found that a large number of people have actually said that when they went to a bigger hook, say 4/0 or 5/0 vs a 3/0 or 2/0 that they actually caught more fish. I was wondering why this would be, and if the larger size of the hook still brings in the smaller ones? In one of the Senko how to threads it was suggested to use 4/0 hooks and a 5" worm. That is what I bought, but I also bought some 2/0 and 3/0 hooks as well. Wondering if I should skip purchasing the smaller hooks once I lose these to snags and just go for the one size of the bigger ones? Thanks Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 almost all of my senko fishing is with a 4/0 hook. Rarely do I change from that. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted April 30, 2010 Super User Posted April 30, 2010 I must be odd, cuz I've used 3/0's w/o any hookset problems.. Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 30, 2010 Super User Posted April 30, 2010 Thickness of the plastic lure should be first consideration when selecting hooks not the length of the plastic lure. Example a Zoom Trick worm is 7 1/2" long but the diameter less half that of a 5" Senko. Quote
Skinnyh2ofishin Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 I agree with Catt, I choose my hook size based mainly on the thickness of the plastic the hook has to go through. On thinner plastics, I actually prefer a smaller hook because it allows more of the plastic to act freely. The area that the hook is in is more rigid, so having less hook equals more action from the bait. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted May 1, 2010 Super User Posted May 1, 2010 The only way to determine the correct hook size (throat & bite) is to lay the hook on top of the lure and phantom its rigged position. Roger Quote
Mike Z Posted May 1, 2010 Author Posted May 1, 2010 Thanks guys. So its not really the size of the hook, but the relationship of proportions so that the jig acts correctly in the water. Should have seen that. Quote
