GaterB Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Does anyone fish jigs with straight braid? I have a multipurpose setup with braid spooled and don't want to change out the line for one technique. Will my current idea of just using a leader of fluoro work? Quote
kylek Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 You could fish it either way and be just fine. I use straight braid on mine. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 26, 2013 Super User Posted March 26, 2013 I fish jigs tied direct to braid , and with a leader. I tied direct in dirty water, or in heavy grass. I use the leader in abrasive cover, or very clear water OR when I want to slow the fall down on a big jig. There are times when they want something big, but not falling fast. A long length of heavy fluorocarbon will do that for me with out having to experiment with multiple trailers and jig combos to find one that falls slower. Quote
TrapperJ Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 jig newb as of last year, i direct tied to braid. Just figured some of the junk you go to cast in you want some solid line to be able to get those beasts out of that hiding spot. 1 Quote
OkeechobeeAngler Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 This I use straight braid for everything. Quote
SudburyBasser Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I use straight braid for everything. Ditto. Quote
Sherlock 60 Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Straight braid here, too. I tried using a fluro leader a few times but it just seemed to be more trouble than it was worth. Plus, it was one more knot that could potentially fail. Quote
Uncle Leo Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 One thing to remember with straight braid; if you are fishing in clean water, no junk be careful on hook set. I have ripped the lip on bass in clean water without cover so you may wish to modify your hook set. Quote
Diggy Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I have one straight braid reel I use all of the time, I may switch it to high vis yellow to see if it helps "line watching" Quote
mjseverson24 Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I almost always use floro when pitching jigs(usually 20-25lb for heavy jigs and 15lb for light jigs). for very heavy cover I use 50 lb braid direct tied. I love the abrasion resistance of floro, the relative invisibility, and also the little bit of stretch in it. I have broke not only line but rods in a hard hookset with braid, with 25 lb floro i have no choice but to ease off on the hooksets which usually results in a better strike to land ratio. Mitch Quote
GaterB Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 I'm usually not a "homerun hitter" with the hooksets to begin with, so I'll probably go straight braid. Thanks everybody! Quote
MrSwimJig Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I use straight braid and it really has helped improve my jig fishing Quote
Arv Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Straight braid or straight flouro for me. I just don't like leaders for some reason. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 27, 2013 Global Moderator Posted March 27, 2013 I hate braid with jigs. Only time I might use them is in heavy grass but if I'm in heavy grass I'm much more likely to fish a streamlined plastic bait than a jig. I stick pretty much to floro for jigs but I know a lot of guys that fish them on straight braid, just not for me. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I use straight braid when I fish braid also. I've always thought if I'm going to fish a leader I might as well fish straight flouro. 1 Quote
jignfule Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I use straight braid for 90% of my jiggin and love it. Quote
