bknap Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I just bought a Revo SX to use for the Alabama Rig how do you think this reel will do with it? Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 26, 2013 Super User Posted March 26, 2013 My opinion, it's not enough reel. That's alot of weight your throwing on a heavy rod. I'm using a Revo Toro this year but in the past used a C3. Try it out and see how it works and report back.. Quote
tbone1993 Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 My friend uses an sx and it doesnt bother him. He knows it is going to destroy the reel but that is why he uses an older sx. I personally use a revo winch but I know that in time it might mess up my reel. Quote
craww Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 It will be fine...Those reels have decent line capacity for their size, a good sturdy frame and strong brass gears. I wouldn't go too high on line size though if you can help it...put 30lb test on there and your spool holds a lot less line. The only trouble I could see you having is if you hooked a big striper and it made a run on you; big ones can make a 100 yard run pretty quick. I have one of the earlier model SX's and other than boat rash its been a tank. Ive casted 4oz baits with it quite a bit and had no issues. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 26, 2013 Super User Posted March 26, 2013 I wouldn't go chunking a a monster umbrella rig with 3 oz. of swimbaits on it, but a lighter rig with 3-4" baits on 1/8 oz. heads should be fine. It's gonna be more a function of the rod, anyway. I wouldn't throw any umbrella rig with less than 40# braid. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted March 26, 2013 Super User Posted March 26, 2013 On the occasions I have used the rig, I threw it on an STX-L with 65lb braid without any problems. Anything above 2.5oz and I would probably switch it to my 301 Curado or Lexa 300L Quote
bknap Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 i have the Revo SX with an Wright and McGill A-rig rod, with 65 pound braid on it, i didnt think it would be an issue Quote

I use 65lb braid with my a rigs. It will destroy your reel after time because it is not made for chunking big baits like the revo toro winch is made for. I know my revo winch will get ruined but I am fine with it. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 27, 2013 Super User Posted March 27, 2013 There is no reason your winch or the SX should get ruined with proper maintenance. Quote
tbone1993 Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 There is no reason your winch or the SX should get ruined with proper maintenance. The gears will blow up over time. This might not happen with a casual angler but it has happened to my friend after a few months of tournament fishing and he cleans his reels all the time. Its caused by all the stress put on the reel. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 27, 2013 Super User Posted March 27, 2013 If he's blowing gears out on a Revo, he's doing something incredibly wrong. In the dozens and dozens of Revos I've serviced, not one has worn out gears. Worn kick plates, ruptured IAR sleeves, worn pawl and worm gears, roasted clutch parts, yes. Gears, no. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted March 27, 2013 Super User Posted March 27, 2013 I can see it being damaged by engaging the thumbar before the spool has stopped but not solely by throwing a heavier bait. I know just a bit about throwing heavy baits. Just a bit. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 27, 2013 Super User Posted March 27, 2013 That'll wreck any reel. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted March 27, 2013 Super User Posted March 27, 2013 Oh, I know. Unfortunately. Quote
BassinB Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I've tossed Double Cowgirl bucktails musky fishing with a revo. Double 10 colorado blades. FAR more resistance than an alabama rig winding, and much heavier. Never had an issue, caught a 47" musky on it too. Quote
