kylek Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I am currently looking at 2 different rods to use to throw jigs, heavier t-rigs and some punching this season. The first one is a Abu Garcia Vendetta 2. It is 7'3" Heavy action with a moderate tip/taper The second one is the Abu Garcia Veritas. It is 7' Heavy action with extra fast tip/taper Which would be the best rod for these applications? And please don't reply with different rods as I prefer the Abu Garcia rods. Thank you for you help. Super User Teal Posted March 26, 2013 Super User Posted March 26, 2013 Do you plan on using braid, fluoro, or mono line? Quote

MrSwimJig Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I prefer XF, but I have heard that for braid you should use a moderate action rod since braid has very little stretch to it and it will help keep from ripping the bait out of the fishes mouth. Quote

But and XF will work too.. i have filppin sticks with both actions.. the XF sticks, just dont rock the boat when you set the hook..it isnt needed. Quote
Brian Needham Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 faster the better for jigs, or so it seems....I don't really get mired down in it, I read the rod label and if it says jigs roll with it. 1 Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted March 26, 2013 Super User Posted March 26, 2013 Jig rod should be XFast. A punch rod can be anything from mod fast to Xfast depending on the graphite used, the resin, and the manufacturer. The XFast Cumara Punch is very close to to ModFast of the St Croix. That being said a good jig rod does not a punch rod make, nor in the other direction. Two different behaviors entirely. If you have to make due with just one rod, bypass both and get a flipping rod that will fit in the middle of the two. 2 Quote

I use dobyns and I like those actions and tips, so I roll with it. I have used a Duckett and had to go "up" one because I didn't really like the standard feel of how they label their rods. I have no clue how ABU labels their rods, but if you have other rods in their line you should be able to guess close enough. Also, when in doubt call the manufacture, and ask they can lead you REAL close to what you are looking for. Quote
Super User Teal Posted March 26, 2013 Super User Posted March 26, 2013 The Vendetta2 7'3H Mod, may be a "crankin" rod. I thought you meant moderate fast action but that rod is a moderate. Any reason you dont look at the 7'6"Heavy fast Veritas. Its a bit longer than the two you mentioned... Quote

Thanks for all the replies. Kyle Quote
pitchin fool Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 The veritas series has a 7'11" heavy moderate action for punching. Trust me the extra length will help you with that presentation. Otherwise the 7' heavy extra fast for just regular jig/t-rig. Quote
