yfz 450 Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 I am in Florida for the week at an uncles house. It is in the crystal river area on the gulf side. What bait and colors are you guys using this time of year. What techniques and so on. I don't know how to fish for southern bass I know it will be similar to n.y. But I know places vary. Thanks for the input. I would love to catch a Florida linker this week. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted March 25, 2013 Super User Posted March 25, 2013 I have fished in a lot of different places and nothing beats those baits you have confidence in. My all purpose baits which have worked for me 1 - Senko 2 - Finesse Worm 3 - Drop Shot 4 - Fluke Stick with the same general principles in terms of color. Because the waters are generally warmer they can be more aggressive so you can also use faster baits. My favorite is still a spinnerbait. Lastly ... If your spots have monsters in them then be ready with at least 10lb test to fight them. Have fun from a fellow New Yorker very envious of you right now ... Attached ... pics of 2 lunkers I caught the last time I fished in Florida. Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 My buddy was just in Orlando area and hired a guide. Got several over 8 but they shiner fished. ...Bill Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted March 26, 2013 Super User Posted March 26, 2013 When I lived in Florida, I did the same things I did in NY and caught plenty of fish. The lakes I fish up here were very similar to the lakes and ponds I fished down there. Shallow, filled with grass, and clear water. This was 20 years ago, but the point is..........bass are bass, fish what you know, you'll catch some. Last time I was down there I hired a guide and shiner fished, I caught one over 8 and a couple of 5's, as well as a bunch of small keepers, but that's just not my thing, and really didn't care to learn much about it, but it was pretty much like shiner fishing up here for pike, which I used to do a lot of back in the 80's, except no steel leaders and you didn't have to wait for them to stop running and turn the bait in there mouth before you hit them. 1 Quote

Theres enough stuff there for cheap to have you catching fish if you didnt bring anything or want some extra. Most of the stuff above is there in various brands. If you are catching bass in NY you should be catching them here with what you have. If I were you tho, see if you can catch some redfish or snook!!! 1 Quote

yfz 450 Posted March 26, 2013 Author Posted March 26, 2013 Well I we t out yesterday in my uncles kyack with out any luck. It was very windy with the cold front that just came through. I was constantly battleing the wind. I was fishing in a slow moving river with a bunch of channels off of it and it looked like the best bass spot I have ever seen in my life. No luck though. I threw senkos ribbon tail worms and spinner baits. I'm hoping to get a day with a little less wind and I might have some success Quote

The wind is crazy outside, Ive been getting bitten on jigs but that all Im fishing at the moment. I caught 2 today on some finesse jigs, dinks but fish is better than no fish in the cold Quote
FLcentral Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Strong cold fronts = slow bass fishing. 1 Quote
Super User MCS Posted March 27, 2013 Super User Posted March 27, 2013 Got a few yesterday on senko style and zoom vibe craws and a couple today on rattlesnakes. Was fishing the dirty water on the wind blown bank at the same pond. They still seem to be biting. I was fishing slow retrieve or a slow sweep and letting it set. No weight on the senkos and 1/16 on the other baits. So just go light n lazy IMO. I have had luck with 10" ribbon tails in similar conditions this winter. the more current or wind the less you have to do, just move it to reposition the bait. Good luck, find what they want and you will get a few. Quote
yfz 450 Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 Well today I'm heading back out on the kyack but this time in a lake. Hopefully a little better luck. Sky's are still bright blue and sunny. I will try fishing real slow today Quote
