First I want to say I appreciate everyone's help so for. Thank you.

I asked, I researched and I tried to read on what would suit my initial purposes and I believe this set up may get me on the right road.

BPS Tourney Special Spinning Rod 7' one-piece medium action.

Pflueger Trion 4735GX7 Reel

Stren 8lb Clear mono

Senko 5" in 194 and 297.

I plan on fishing them weightless and per the article I found here.:

http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/13845-guaranteed-to-catch-bass/?hl=%20guaranteed

I know, it's not exact but I worked with what I had.

Should work just fine!

Senko colors are good, standard, and bass catchers.

Fish 'em wacky, TX rigged.

BTW, the article you mention is not linked to. Or at least I can't see it.

Nothing wrong with that setup, lots of guys in my club fish with stuff not as nice as that.Fish slow and thorough and you'll be fine.

I think you're in for a ton of fun, no matter what.  :)  As the previous poster said, just take your time and have fun.

Nice set up.

I think its alot easier for a beginner to fish Senkos wacky style with a 2/0 weedless hook.

GL and have fun. You will kill them in shallow water in the spring.

Nice setup, good luck.

Don't forget to post up a pic of that first fish on your new combo.

This is great stuff guys. First I get the impression that he is just getting started. You guys are being very encouraging, not telling him he needs a $300.00 rod, and a $200.00 dollar reel, to enjoy fishing. I see too much of that. What he is using, I could fish with all day, and be a VERY happy camper.

Not that Stren mono is bad or anything but when that gives up, get yourself some 8lb YoZuri hybrid line to put in there. It's a really great fishing line.

You'll be fine and having fun in no time.

Find some weeds or a nice laydown and hold onto that rod!

Love this post.

To the OP, that is a good set up. It looks like you did your homework and found a rod/reel and line combo to fit a need. Kudos. Continue to research as you grow as a fisherman.

I encourage you to also try the YUM dingers too. They are inexpensive, can be found in any walmart and perform great.

Thanks gents, I'm excited and can't wait to hit the water. Every pond, river and lake I pass has me scanning the bank for places to cast.

Funny thing though in my excitement and multiple trips to the "fishing" store, I've forgotten to get my license for two trips running.

On a lighter but related note I picked up an ultralight rig for the kids and we were practicing casting yesterday. Now if this weather would clear.

Hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like there is too much line on your reel. This will cause alot of loops/line twist/headaches.

You only want to fill your spool to within an 1/8 inch of the edge of the spool, at most. It looks like yours is filled up right to the edge.

Again it could just be the picture, but it's something you should check out.

I started out with that same reel last year. It's a workhorse, and a good choice.

Good luck!

True @ hootie, I didn't know those things were needed until I came here.

Enjoy your purchase

That trion reel is very smooth and is a great value for the money spent. Im actually looking into buying one myself. I think you will definitely love the senkos its hard to fish those wrong and they catch fish like no other for many. My young niece was able to catch 7 bass in 30 minutes and it was her 2nd time bass fishing. Id look into the wacky rings too in order to save some money on baits. You can make your own with dental bands, etc

Spinning rods and senkos, thats what got me hooked into this whole bass fishing scene. Goodluck and hold on because you never know when the big one is about to hit!

I started out with a rod/reel combo that wasn't even a shadow of what that one is, and I had a blast! Now, I actually have that same reel you have, but I've had mine for about 5 years, going on 6. It's a real workhorse and has held up great even against abuse and being loaned to friends who were not easy on it. Still slick smooth. I'm thinking of getting another spinning rod, maybe two, and the Trion is probably what I'll be getting for a reel on them. For a $40 reel, these are nicer than some a good bit more expensive. Shoot, I should probably stock a few of these back for when my current reels wear out while they're still making them. At the $40 range it really just doesn't get any better than the Trion.

great setup. If you are going to be fishing clear water lakes, get some flourocarbon. Best line there is for finesse.

Excellent.

Just two small suggestions.

Go with 8-pound test flouro for the Senko when you buy line again.

Consider a smaller hook to fish the Senko wacky. A #1 or 1/0 (weedless or not) are good for wacky Senkos.

Now go out and slay 'em!

that reel has been on my main spinning rod for 2 years and counting. great reel.
