Koofy Smacker Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 First ones are going in Pittsburgh and Harrisburg I think. DSG is based just outside of Pittsburgh so they are keeping it close. They WILL be carrying handguns as well as a lot more fishing and hunting stuff. I have seen new stuff being added to the inventory daily which is all stuff that DSG doesnt carry in their stores Quote
fishingman88 Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Awesome! More competition is always better for consumers Maybe we'll see some new products and better pricing! Quote
Sodus Bay Scooter Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Cool, maybe Buffalo and/or Rochester will get one. Kind of lean around here for that stuff. The Gander Mtn. in Henrietta is bad, the Dicks pretty much right across the road in Marketplace Mall is ok, probably the best one in the Rochester area. In and around Buffalo the Gander in North Tonowanda is much better than the Henrietta store, and the Dicks in Galleria Mall is ok, but like the Rochester area the rest of the Dicks are pretty lame. BPS is an hour and a half drive for me, and frankly, unless I am bored, or have another reason to go that way, I don't really care much for it. I have been in other BPS's in other cities and the one in Auburn has been the worst. Hey, I'm from Rochester too. I live in Ontario right now but lived in Greece for awhile. Nice to see fellow locals on here. 1 Quote
lazeebum Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 We have a Gander Mountain in Florence, Al. I think in the six months or so that it has been open I have bought one crankbait from them. The Dick's Sporting Goods in the same town has good service and fair prices. They had the same price as BPS on the depth finder that I recently bought. Quote
SudburyBasser Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Yes As much as I don't want to agree with you but yeah. The only BPS in Ontario, Canada is the one just outside of Toronto in Vaughn. You figure in the metropolitan area it's located in there are at least four million people, which is probably just under half the population for the entire province. We may per capita hunt and fish far more up north but you aren't potentially drawing upon millions of people...and every time I drive by the Vaughn BPS the parking lot is full -- summer or winter. Ah well. Quote
Scorcher214 Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Bass Pro? It's an hour away. Gander MT....bout a half hour, Dicks is seriously no more than 10 minutes from me. I do most of my shopping online but it would be nice to be able to go into a store and hold a reel or rod before i buy it. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Cool, I like the concept of another big outdoor store. If only because when they close up shop in 2 years I can get a lot of baits on clearance... Quote
The Rooster Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 We're getting a regular DSG store. I'm interested since it will be just ten minutes, maybe not even that long, away from my house, but it will just have the same stuff I can buy at my local tackle shops. I hope it doesn't cause problems for those guys, I'd far rather shop with them over a box store. I know they will have things that DSG won't, plus I get deals with them sometimes, and also, there's just the "feeling" you get when you go in and they know you and you know them. Quote
Blues19 Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Closest store other than Walmart that sells fishing stuff is a Bass Pro or Academy in Springfield Mo. So I splurge when I have to drive an hour and a half. I wish they had something closer. Even if it was Walmart creating an outdoor store. I would love it. Sounds like the Dicks will be up north where as Academy is south. Quote

I have always had a great experience with that store and the customer service Quote
pymy bassin Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I have been to the DSG in Cranberry Twp and have to admit their hunting and fishing section is ALOT better than the normal stores. It's a 2 story building and almost the entire up stairs is hunting/fishing related. It's gonna be a tough choice for me now, cause I live an hour from it and an hour from Erie where they are putting up a new cabalas in the mill creek mall. Guess only time will tell how good the cabelas is once they build it. It's supposed to be very small though. Quote
rmcguirk Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 What problems have you had at the Auburn store? I have always had a great experience with that store and the customer service Personally, I like the Auburn store well enough. It is far better than my local Rochester-area Dicks and Gander Mountain stores, which tend to have pretty limited selection (Dicks worse than Gander). There are plenty of sales people at BPS, and all pretty nice. I've never really tried to test the limits of their knowledge (or mine ), so I can't really comment on that. I will say, though, that every time I'm there, the rod selection is somewhat limited, at least on the higher end. If I drive an hour to visit, I want to be able to handle the best gear, try my reel out to feel the balance, you know, kick the tires. Anyway, it is a minor gripe. I only go there a couple of times a year, generally for the spring sale and when I'm in the area visiting family in Syracuse and have some time to kill. For me, it is more about getting excited for the season than buying necessities, which I can get on line at BPS or just as easily at places like TW. Anyway, I'd love it if they put one of the new Field and Stream stores near me. Competition is always good. Quote
chromedog Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I hear ya. They tend to overload on BPS brand rods and have very few of anything else. Sometimes it can be really limited. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted March 26, 2013 Author Super User Posted March 26, 2013 That is awesome!!! I live 40 mins. north of Latham in the Glens Falls area. The closest BPS or Cabela's is 3-4 hrs away, I always wondered why they wouldn't put one in Albany, I mean if you travel north on I-87 on a Friday night or Sat. morning and look at the traffic heading north to Saratoga, Lake George or the Adirondacks it only makes sense to put one there. I lived in Albany for a few yrs and when I'd head north to visit the family on weekends the traffic was almost as bad as rush hour with people escaping to the Adirondacks. On another note there is talk about a Cabelas coming to my backyard off of Exit 17 that will be viewable from I-87 to catch the people heading north to the Adirondacks, but that is a good 5-8 yrs away. They are trying to develop the Exit 17 corridor with all the new microchip plants coming to the area and are looking at Cabelas being the anchor store for a new shopping mall and business district. There is also a rumor that they are opening up the Cabelas just outside of Albany Airport near Wolf Road. Read it on the Times Union. Quote
fowlskies Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 There is also a rumor that they are opening up the Cabelas just outside of Albany Airport near Wolf Road. Read it on the Times Union. I use to live right off Wolf Rd on Sand Creek. I'm kinda interested in where they would put it on the north end of Wolf. I wonder if they will go for a BPS off exit 17, the article I read in the PostStar said it was would be either or and that both stores were interested in the area and were aiming more towards Cabelas. It's be nice to be able to go somewhere else other than Dick's and Walmart for my hunting & fishing supplies/needs. Only been to the Sports Authority a couple times on Washington Ave Ext. but wasn't impressed. 1 Quote
