Super User Felix77 Posted March 24, 2013 Super User Posted March 24, 2013 Looks like Dicks Sporting Goods is opening up a new line of stores similar to BassPro and Cabelas. It will be under the "Field and Stream" brand. The first is in PA and others are rumored to open up including one in my backyard. http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=132215&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=1795055&highlight= and the one in my backyard ... http://www.bizjournals.com/albany/news/2013/03/20/exclusive-dicks-sporting-goods.html Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 24, 2013 Super User Posted March 24, 2013 Cool, maybe Buffalo and/or Rochester will get one. Kind of lean around here for that stuff. The Gander Mtn. in Henrietta is bad, the Dicks pretty much right across the road in Marketplace Mall is ok, probably the best one in the Rochester area. In and around Buffalo the Gander in North Tonowanda is much better than the Henrietta store, and the Dicks in Galleria Mall is ok, but like the Rochester area the rest of the Dicks are pretty lame. BPS is an hour and a half drive for me, and frankly, unless I am bored, or have another reason to go that way, I don't really care much for it. I have been in other BPS's in other cities and the one in Auburn has been the worst. Quote
MrSwimJig Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 It will be interesting to see what comes of it. More choices is never a bad thing. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted March 24, 2013 Super User Posted March 24, 2013 Sounds good to me. Nice to see a Dick's store going to focus on the 'roots', well a lot more than what's in DSG now Quote
Scorcher214 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Would love to get one by me. Lol, the DSG by me doesn't carry enough fishing tackle. I'd like having a outdoor specialty store near me. Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted March 24, 2013 Super User Posted March 24, 2013 I live in Jacksonville FL I have 2 by me the one in the town center has an extensive collection of hunting and fishing gear and the other one ain't too shabby either. I would like to see them open up or concert one into the field and steam concept you are talking about. I like bass pro shop but for some reason there is not one here Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 24, 2013 Super User Posted March 24, 2013 Competition is always good for consumers. Quote
jhoffman Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 I dont understand opening these big stores in major cities. Do that many outdoor enthusiasts live in major cites? I simply dont see that going hand in hand with an outdoor lifestyle. The city drives me insane. I always wondered why they choose the locations they do. Lets look at bass pro and cabelas within pa. Both, in the south east corner of the state. The majority of the recreation is found in the north central and north west portion of the state. If I was in charge at one of those corps. I wouldve put mine right smack in the center of the state. Equal driving distance for everyone. Or better yet, I wouldve opened bass pro on the way to Lake Erie or Raystown. Epicenters of fishing! Im sure they choose locations based on traffic but when the bass pro isles are empty in except for sales days something is wrong. If you wouldve put that bass pro at raystown it wouldve been a sure thing it wouldve been full from Apr->October almost daily. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted March 24, 2013 Super User Posted March 24, 2013 I'm sure they do in depth marketing studies to determine locations, and one of the prime factors has to be population densities in various areas. They also study demographics, but basically it boils down to this. They build 'em where the money is. 2 Quote
fowlskies Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 That is awesome!!! I live 40 mins. north of Latham in the Glens Falls area. The closest BPS or Cabela's is 3-4 hrs away, I always wondered why they wouldn't put one in Albany, I mean if you travel north on I-87 on a Friday night or Sat. morning and look at the traffic heading north to Saratoga, Lake George or the Adirondacks it only makes sense to put one there. I lived in Albany for a few yrs and when I'd head north to visit the family on weekends the traffic was almost as bad as rush hour with people escaping to the Adirondacks. On another note there is talk about a Cabelas coming to my backyard off of Exit 17 that will be viewable from I-87 to catch the people heading north to the Adirondacks, but that is a good 5-8 yrs away. They are trying to develop the Exit 17 corridor with all the new microchip plants coming to the area and are looking at Cabelas being the anchor store for a new shopping mall and business district. gripnrip Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Interesting. I have an old boss that I worked for at Home Depot that now is a manager at Academy. He says Dick's is supposed to put a store where I live and I am wondering if that type of store is coming to this area. In Tulsa we have 2 Academy's and 3 Dick's. Bass Pro is close by in Broken Arrow. I would be thrilled to see this happen. A place that carry's loads of gear other than Wally world would be awesome! Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 24, 2013 Super User Posted March 24, 2013 Please make it so down here in the Hampton Roads area!!! Quote
Trailer Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 I'm lucky. They are building a BassPro just 10 minutes away from my house. We are a rural state but they picked a major interstate interchange for the location. Every week I drive by and see more progress to my heart's delight. In the past I had to drive to Memphis, Shreveport or Branson/Springfield. Quote

Sounds like I haven't missed out on a lot. I don't buy much tackle these days compared to my younger days, but even my modest needs can't be met by the combination of Dick's and Gander. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted March 25, 2013 Author Super User Posted March 25, 2013 Agree about the Auburn BPS. It's tiny and limited compared to any other I have been to. I go to the Foxboro MA one if I am bored. Kills me because I am a Giants fan. Quote

BassCats Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Just hope they don't hire the people that work at the other dicks stores. Every Dicks store I have ever been to has had horrible customer service and nobody who worked in the hunting fishing department had a clue. Quote

I submitted a resume before in regards to a part time position in the lodge. I have torn bows down to individual parts and rebuilt them, plus all the fishing experience, never even had an email. I've never been to the Cabela's in Hamburg and not seen a full parking lot. I was there yesterday to pick something up at 9am when they opened and the lot was already half full. Someone does their research. Quote
