The Young Gun Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I know I'm only 15 1/2 but I really love the fishing atmosphere and would love to fish on a college team. But don't know much about them.. I'm looking to get into University of Stevens Point (Wisconsin) and be one of the team members. What does it take to become a college angler? Do you make a resume? Portfolio of pictures? I know I have a ways to go, I'm just looking for goals to shoot for. Thanks a ton, Cole 1 Quote

I'm trying to at least find a club to fish in around where I live. Everybody I have talked to says that you should get on a club and get as many tournaments as you can done. Quote

I live in Illinois near Chicago but my family has a cabin in Lake Tomahawk. I'm pretty sure it's like an hour away from Wausau. What lakes do you fish up there? Quote
bknap Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 I fish for Northern Kentucky University and this is the first year for our program. It is a very laid back atmosphere and a lot of fun. You get ALOT of free fishing stuff!! No resume or anything you can just join for a member fee. Its a lot of fun! Quote
BenB54 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Most collegiate bass teams are clubs that are recognized by the school but, they're not funded by the school. Usually it's free or you pay a small fee to join the club. Some colleges are starting to recognize bass fishing as a school sport now and are actually giving scholarships if you are good, just depends on the college. As far as collegiate clubs go, it really helps if you have a boat or have access to a boat. 1 Quote
JunkYard814 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 I would recommend starting to contact some schools you are interested in to see if they have a team. Before I arrived here at Penn State, I got in contact with a few guys and they informed me that they do have a club, which does have competitive fishing but also recreational. An email or a phone call never hurt and what's the worst they are going to tell you? No you can't join? Then check with another school if that's really what you are looking for. Quote
bassinKS Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Im getting on the Kansas State team next year, they told me it was just a $20 fee and your on. It does not mean you will fish the big tournaments or all of the tournaments that depends on the club tournaments you have and a point system I think, at least that is my understanding of how it works here at K-State. You will just have to check with them, most of the teams have a website check there and if it does not say then contact them directly and ask them. Quote
Blues19 Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I fished on the Missouri State University team a few years ago. It was an awesome experience. I hope you all get to have a similar expereince Quote
BassinB Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Well I fish on the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point team. I'm a senior there. It doesn't require any of those things here. Show up to the meetings and pay the dues ($). Whether or not you have a boat makes a big difference. If you do you can fish the club tourneys, if not you will have to be a nonboater and find a partner. You earn points in the club tourneys and thats how you qualify to travel and fish some of the bigger tournaments. UWSP has a club with a LOT of good sticks. Ranked 7th in the country last year. Lot of competition, even here in the state. We fished the midwest open in Madison against UWW and UW-Madison last fall and placed very high. I went to Whitewater my freshman year and fished on their team for a season. No offense, but they aren't on the same level as the guys at UWSP. It's a lot more serious up here in comparison. I'll be traveling to Fort Madison Iowa at the end of may for a BASS tournament. We've sent quite a few boats down south already this spring and all have placed well. Good luck. Quote
YoungProdigy19 Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Only 2 offer scholarships, the rest are clubs. You can just enter if you want. Quote

Super User Sam Posted August 1, 2013 Super User Posted August 1, 2013 29, the smaller schools have just as much of a chance of doing well as do the larger schools. It's fishing, not football!!! 1 Quote
