I know I'm only 15 1/2 but I really love the fishing atmosphere and would love to fish on a college team. But don't know much about them.. I'm looking to get into University of Stevens Point (Wisconsin) and be one of the team members. What does it take to become a college angler? Do you make a resume? Portfolio of pictures? I know I have a ways to go, I'm just looking for goals to shoot for. Thanks a ton,

Cole

Haha, I want to do the same thing.  I want to go to Whitewater though.  I'm trying to at least find a club to fish in around where I live.  Everybody I have talked to says that you should get on a club and get as many tournaments as you can done.

Haha, whitewater has a sweet team to! Where are you located? I'm closer to point. I'm a little north of Wausau.

I live in Illinois near Chicago but my family has a cabin in Lake Tomahawk.  I'm pretty sure it's like an hour away from Wausau.  What lakes do you fish up there?

I fish for Northern Kentucky University and this is the first year for our program. It is a very laid back atmosphere and a lot of fun. You get ALOT of free fishing stuff!! No resume or anything you can just join for a member fee. Its a lot of fun!

Most collegiate bass teams are clubs that are recognized by the school but, they're not funded by the school. Usually it's free or you pay a small fee to join the club. Some colleges are starting to recognize bass fishing as a school sport now and are actually giving scholarships if you are good, just depends on the college. As far as collegiate clubs go, it really helps if you have a boat or have access to a boat.

I would recommend starting to contact some schools you are interested in to see if they have a team. Before I arrived here at Penn State, I got in contact with a few guys and they informed me that they do have a club, which does have competitive fishing but also recreational. An email or a phone call never hurt and what's the worst they are going to tell you? No you can't join? Then check with another school if that's really what you are looking for.

Im getting on the Kansas State team next year, they told me it was just a $20 fee and your on. It does not mean you will fish the big tournaments or all of the tournaments that depends on the club tournaments you have and a point system I think, at least that is my understanding of how it works here at K-State. You will just have to check with them, most of the teams have a website check there and if it does not say then contact them directly and ask them.

Well I fish on the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point team.  I'm a senior there. It doesn't require any of those things here. Show up to the meetings and pay the dues ($).  Whether or not you have a boat makes a big difference. If you do you can fish the club tourneys, if not you will have to be a nonboater and find a partner.  You earn points in the club tourneys and thats how you qualify to travel and fish some of the bigger tournaments.  UWSP has a club with a LOT of good sticks.  Ranked 7th in the country last year. Lot of competition, even here in the state.  We fished the midwest open in Madison against UWW and UW-Madison last fall and placed very high.  I went to Whitewater my freshman year and fished on their team for a season.  No offense, but they aren't on the same level as the guys at UWSP.  It's a lot more serious up here in comparison. I'll be traveling to Fort Madison Iowa at the end of may for a BASS tournament.  We've sent quite a few boats down south already this spring and all have placed well.  Good luck.

The white water guys are pretty down to earth  met a few of them last summer at a tournament and a few throughout this year.  I might see you at fort madison, pending if I work or not.

Here is an old article from 2010 but you can note what it says.

At that time Wisconsin-Stevens Point was ranked 7th in the country in the FLW.

BASS has its college program, too.

When you go to college you will change your priorities. Here is what they may be:

29, the smaller schools have just as much of a chance of doing well as do the larger schools.

It's fishing, not football!!!

If it's anything like high school (I'm only a freshman) it would be like this for me:

There's two B. Monkies. One of them's the bait monkey and believe it or not it's the cheap one  :wink7: .

Don't worry they do, but I can spit that hook like a bass spits a jig.

Why would you spit it?
