Fishing N Boots Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I had an H2O Rod & Reel that i had purchased from Academy last year. A couple of weeks ago I was bank fishing and got hung up, I tried getting it loose when in doing so broke the Rod smooth in half. Went to Academy to try and see if they would replace it since i purchased 1 year ago and they would not. So instead of purchasing from Academy i went to Bass Pro just to mainly look around. Was checking out the ABU Garcia Vendetta, and ended up purchasing it. I bought a 6'9" Medium-Heavy, I intend to use it mainly for Jigs and Worms (texas/carolina rigging). I also purchased some new line as mine is getting old. I purchased some Berkeleys Vanish Transition (14lb) fluorocarbon. I was wanting to know what you guys though of my choices? Do you think I bought the correct pole for what I intend to use it for? How about the line, do you believe it is a good line for my Baitcaster? I have been reading the articles and am just hoping that I made the right decision. On the 5th I am going to buy the ABU REVO SX that is Red/Black that will match the rod. Thanks! Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted March 22, 2013 Global Moderator Posted March 22, 2013 I've never used a Vendetta but have heard many good reviews. Never used that brand of line either. However, the length and power of the rod, the lb test, and useing floro are all good decisions for what you want to do. Mike Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 22, 2013 Super User Posted March 22, 2013 A tip for when you get hung up. Reel in all the slack line, thumb on your spool, and walk backward keeping your rod straight in line with the line. Don't bend it trying to free the hook. Pull steady. If it breaks (the line), great, if not, set the rod down, free up enough line so you can wrap it around your arm, if you have a towel or something, wrap that on your arm, then the line. Pull till the line breaks. You won't be horsing your rod around this way. Only the line will break.... 2 Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted March 23, 2013 Super User Posted March 23, 2013 Very good tip from Darren, I have done the same trick many times. Works like a charm. As for your setup, that should work fine for what you are wanting to do. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 23, 2013 Super User Posted March 23, 2013 Line...any kind...cuts. I take a small branch and wrap the line around it a few times, then pull. OP, can't help with rod, but it should work fine according to its specs. Don't have, nor ever used, an SX reel. Do know the older models got quite a few posts about how hard they were 2 set up correctly. According to the posts, they cast like champs once set up right, tho. No idea about the newest model. I will say that many like the S model a lot. My low profile Abu reels are an STX and Premier...both Gen 1 models. The Premier purchased over the winter, but the STX gets taken to Florida each year when I visit. Don't mean to sound like I am trying to dissuade you from purchasing the SX as the new model may be great. We like what we like. I feel it is important to buy what interests you the most. It is amazing what we can adapt to if it brings us joy. Sounds like the combination would make a great looking combo. I say go for it. Quote
MrSwimJig Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Heard good things about the Vendetta rods but their is better fluorocarbon line. Seaguar Abraz-X or Invizi-X and they are about the same price. 1 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted March 23, 2013 Super User Posted March 23, 2013 I get stuck a lot. It has been over a decade since I've broken a rod getting unstuck. Here is what I do. A - See if you can get to the other side of the snag. Often it will come right off. B- If you can't get to the other side of the snag, get enough slack line to wrap 5 or 6 times around the rod handle. Jerk hard and it will either come off or break the line. C- If B doesn't work, back away from the snag using the trolling motor, that generally does work. Sometimes you will move the snag. Brace yourself and be careful that this process doesn't move you into the water. That isn't good. D- If A, B, & C don't work, cut your losses and cut your line. Don't waste time messing around with a snag when you came to the lake to go fishing. E- Lets say A, B & C didn't work and you don't want to cut the line because you're throwing an expensive/favorite bait. Some times an extendable pole type retriever works. Some times a "hound dog" type retriever works, one that will slide down your line and knock your lure loose. Both of these lure retrievers work best when you can get directly above your bait. If you are at very much of an angle to your bait, they don't work very well. If you are stuck in a tree above the water, the hound dog type of lure retriever won't work at all. F- If step E don't work, go back to D. There isn't any need to break a rod to get a lure unstuck. To your other issue with your line, I fished 14 lb Vanish for years, since it first came out. For the most part I found that it didn't break any more often or any less often that any other 14 lb fluorocarbon line that I tried. With the exception of Invisx or Abrazx. Having said that, I think that there are better fluorocarbon lines out there. Quote
BassinB Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 I've had some bad experiences with Vanish line, and I've heard I''m not the only one. I recommend Trilene 100% flourocarbon. The rod and reel selection sounds pretty good to me too. 1 Quote

Yeah, I always have reeled in the slack, held thumb on spool and pulled the rod behind me while walking, at this point I was frustrated, and yanked on it, which made it snap. I couldn't believe that it snapped though, as I didnt yan'k that hard. Thank you very much for the tips, Quote

I will have an addition $150.00 that I can spend on a reel on the 5th, so the SX is in that range, also it will match my rod. I don't think you are dissuading me, I posted it to get some type of reflection and knowledge on the different types that are out there, so thanks for the info. I get stuck a lot. I hate the fact that I had to go buy a new rod, would of much rather took that $80 and put towards a reel or tackle. The reason that I went with the Vanish Transition was because it changes from the clear color to red to make it more visible to the fisherman without being more visible to the fish, supposively. So i figured hey, for $15 I can try it out this season, if I dont like it, may switch it up. Is it true that Fluorocarbon is better for a baitcaster where as Mono and Braid is better on Spinning set up? Quote
skeletor6 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Go with trilene 100% instead of vanish. Unless you can spend some more money a get a mid-grade fluoro. Quote
