Super User Fishes in trees Posted April 24, 2010 Super User Posted April 24, 2010 So you need help organizing your tackle box? Don't we all. Start throwing stuff into it. Try to keep the stuff you think you'll need most toward the top - but that won't happen. Tackle boxes have a way of shifting whatever you need to the bottom. Back to step A - start throwing stuff into your tackle box. When it is full, then go buy another one and repeat. Try to buy them in different colors. Maybe you will remember which color bag you threw whatever you need - maybe not though. No one can solve tackle box storage issues, but it is something to do in your shop when, for whatever reason you can't go fishiing. BE mindful - everyone who says they have their tackle storage issues solved is lying - either to you or to themselves. Quote

wormdirt Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 cant u put the bags in those little pouches on the sides? Quote
leslie_goes_mental Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 My main tackle bag is about identical to the one you use. Here's what I do: I have 5 of those BPS large plastic organizers. 1: for cranks starting with shallow then I work my way up to deep divers. 2: Jerkbaits, jointed baits and other slender profile baits 3: Spinnerbaits and anything with blades. 4: Spoons...not the kind for soup eating... and jigs 5: For big baits....swimbaits, musky lures, striper plugs, etc. Side pockets: pliers, fishing license, protection gloves, water, nail clippers I have another bag totally committed to plastics. I put all the weights in a small plastic box from lightest to heaviest and then swivels/beads at the end. Another box for hooks: 2/0 up to 5/0 and jig heads. I have another bag totally committed to panfish with small crappie jigs and stuff for blue gills. I have another bag totally committed to fly fishing. I think that bout covers it. If needed, I'll just move some of the other stuff over into the main bag, depending on what I'm fishing for. Quote
leslie_goes_mental Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 Oh, I would keep the plastics in the bags they come in. Quote

Spent 10 minutes looking for my scale today, actually had to throw the fish in the livewell before weighing him as to not keep him dry too long. It was SUPPOSED to be in my kit bag main pouch, but after searching the glove box, the hard box, the port and starboard bow storage, it was in my map pouch. Who shoves a scale into a map pouch?! You do ;D If you have extra lures that don't fit you can always send them to me. I seperate everything by type of lure. Each plastic box is "specialized". Lipless cranks in one, reg cranks in another, topwater in another etc. I have many other boxes for soft plastics and keep those separated by type. Senkos in one, flukes, in another, tubes in another etc. And one separate box for jigs. I know where everything is at. Funny, I saw an episode of City Limits Fishing and Mike Iconelli spent a looonnng time loking for a certain lure. He had a storage compartment in the front of his boat with a bunch of packaged lures dumped in there, instead of plastic storage boxes. For me every second in a tourney counts. I can't be wasting time looking for a lure. The more time that is wasted the less chance I have of cashing a check. ;D Quote
Pantera61 Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 You might want to start by getting rid of what you don't need or haven't used in 2 years or more. Take the 3 tactics you use the most, for me that would be shallow cranks and topwater, pitchin' and finesse plastics. Shallow cranks and topwaters are combined because although they really aren't the same, topwaters generally replace shallow cranks when summer hits, then back to shallow cranks in the fall. I have a token amount of medium, deep and lipless cranks, just enough to get me through a situation that may arise. I don't Carolina rig or toss swimbaits, you should be getting my drift. You can get by with 3 colors of plastics from these choices: Black, watermelon, pumpkinseed, bluegill, purple, maybe a couple others. If you want really want to be hardcore, see if you can fit all your tackle in a Plano 1444 GUIDE SERIES box. Quote
kms399 Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 I have 6 boxes in my tackle bag jerk baits jigs hooks/weights shallow cranks deep cranks top water I have a big mouth box for buzzbaits/spinnerbaits then I have 8 large plano boxes filled to bursting with plastics that i keep in a storage compartment in my boat 2 boxes of lizards senkos craw/creatures tubes flukes finesse jig trailers I then have 2 boxes that don't fit in the tackle bag swim baits musky bucktails/ topwater Quote
Gangley Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Hard baits in one box, worms in another, creatures in one, frogs in one, deep cranks in one, shallow cranks in one, terminal tackle in one, minnows in one, etc. Everything is organized and seperated by style/type, I am a freak about it. If a lure hasnt caught a fish for me yet, it doesnt go in the hard boxes, it stays in a carboard box off to the side with other unproven lures. Only once I have caught a fish with it, does it go into one of the hard tackle boxes. I have a Browning backpack that easily carries 6 boxes, and so I take what I need according to where I will be fishing, and I will generally load up 2-3 lures that I havent used yet, or are determining whether or not I will keep them, and thats it. Everything else stays at home. In my opinion, If I cant catch a fish with 6 boxes loaded with lures that have proven themselves to me, then I dont need to be fishing that day . Quote
ClarkGriswald Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Labels on the ends of the boxes with what's inside. Quote
YNCBASSMAN Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 all my tackleboxes, bags and 6 combos are stored in my truck right now. i have a supercab F150 and the back seat looks like the tackle section at walmart, only with better selection Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted April 28, 2010 Super User Posted April 28, 2010 The only thing I could say is...pray. The best thing I did was make a peg board wall in the garage to unload my stuff after a fishing trip. I'll re-load it for the next trip out. It keeps my gear fairly organized that way. Although I always try to take only what I need, I still seem to end up with like 15 bags of soft plastics floating around every available spot in my bag. My worst box is my terminal tackle box. My next step to try and organize that is to print out some labels with brand name and size and stick them down into the trays. Quote
Gangley Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 Most of the lures have a label on the box that says type and depth. I will generally cut that piece off and throw it in the slot that the lure will be placed. Keeps me from having to remember all the details of the lure. Quote

I take the (Gamakatsu, Gambler, Owner, etc.) label out of the little sleeve, and cut it to fit the size of the compartment. It says what it is, and the size that way. Quote
