Folks,

I fish Rapala's regularly.  it's one of my favorite crankbait brands (my two largest bass came off of Rapala glass raps).  But last year I tried a countdown for the first time with high expectations.  It seemed to me, however, that it didn't have any action whatsoever.  It didn't wiggle, it didn't shimmy.  It didn't shake.  It didn't seem to do anything but sink.  Fishing it was like dragging a soggy hotdog through the water.  Did I get a hold of a bad bait or is that how they always run?

They have a tight wiggle. You might feel it better on lighter line. I use 6 or 8 lb test at most. I've probably caught over a 1000 fish over the years on the humble countdown, I don't leave home without them.

It must be a heck of a subtle wiggle cause, again, I detected nothing.  I'll try lighter line and see if that helps.  Thanks for your post.

Its funny, this bait is what I used to catch my first bass ever 14 years ago and it was a good one at 4-1 which is on my wall.  Because of that fish I really got hooked into this sport.  I haven't used one since seeing as how the only one I own is the one that caught that first bass.  That lure is in its orginal box next to the fish.  Probably should go out and invest in a few to get that kid feeling again.

That lure is seldom talked about and underutilized, but it'll catch anything that swims.

X's 2 on that.  I first tried it on 10lb line and it didn't seem to do anything.  Later on in the year I tried it on my trout rod with 4lb line and it had much better action.

Does it need a rapala knot for the action to kick in, or a split ring?

X-3 I should fish it more than I do. For me the CD 7 was my go too bait years ago in silver/black. My first big walleye came on one that was just under 8 lbs.! But I have caught a ton of bass on them.
