Would You Call In Sick To Go Fishing?

I work three 12's a week, I'm off more than I work so I have no need to call in sick. If I plan my schedule right I can end up with 6 days off and still work all of my hours! I love nursing!

I have never called in sick.  A first line manager in the dept. I work in told me many years ago that the big bosses do not like sick days.  The only time we are expected to be out sick is if we are being hospitalized.

In my younger years I used to use all my sick days for fishing days. Didn't have to go with anyone...I just liked to fish. Later years I got a bit more responsible.

id love to, thought about it plenty of times, but never actually did it. lots of times ive called in sick and then work will call me at home to ask me questions about something, so if im not home or dont call back in a reasonable amount of time, they can pretty much figure i lied.

Guess I'm in the minority here. There's no such thing as a sick day where I work. And I don't see my employer taking it too well either if he caught me 1) lying 2) not showing up.

I'll save fishing for my scheduled off days.

I have done it. I will do it again but right now I have a new schedule that allows me fish 7 days  a week. now I only need to fix the car i use to pull the trailer

 

with the desperation of going fishing again I would call tomorrow If I had the chance.

I've called in sick to fish local bodies of water a few times. It's really bad after a long winter when you get those first few real warm days. I get off work at 8AM when it's warming up out and it smells good out with everything blooming and all the birds that haven't been around all winter are singing, it makes it really tough sometimes.

During my career I had the good fortune of having a fairly short working day, often I found the time to do as I wished.  Owners have perks, but can't say how many times I was called off the water or golf course to take care of something.  Business always came first, no exceptions, after all that's what made everything else possible.  Would I give an employee time off for a recreational activity, little chance of that.  A fishing tournament, golf outing, vacations of course are fine as long as I had enough lead time to get someone to cover for their absence.

A few years back I had a boss with a great sense of humor who was also a fisherman.

 

Early on a fine May morning I said to him, " What are we doing here? Why aren't we out fishing?"

 

He looked at me and said, "You don't know how to call in sick?"

I have called out of work a few times and when in high school I skipped 2 or 3 days to go surfing. Epic swells only come a few times a year lol.

I would and have called in and I would go back to Escondido CA to Lake Hodges some of the most aggressive Largies i have ever caught

No. I have a hard time sacrificing my integrity (that took years to build up) by lying about being sick and then fishing. Its too easy to switch shifts with someone at the last minute or use vacation time at the last minute. I id rather be upfront with the boss and tell them that im not coming in and that i have person x covering for me while i take a "mental health day" at the lake.

However, to play along... if i was to do it, it would probably be a week long down at the Big O

I don't call out sick to begin with, only time I take is for family vacations or business. If it is last minute an not a family emergency then there is no reason to 1) lying and 2) not showing up to work. I value integrity, honesty and a sense of duty especially for the folks that put food on my table and tackle in my box....just sayin.

Oh....I smell a topic that is going to be locked soon, but before it is, I feel I'm entitled to a defense. First, my employer came to me and asked me to work for them. I had not worked for 4-5 years since retiring. Yes, retiring after 24 years of military service where I saved enough money to build a home and provide for my family for the rest of my life. While you were enjoying your freedom and way of life, I was serving my country in far away lands, away from my family and learning the true meaning of integrity, duty, and honor. When I called in that particular day, I was 1) actually sick of work and 2) sick of working for a multi-billion dollar company who holds numerous state and federal contracts and whose CEOs lie and cheat their way to multi-million dollar bank accounts while their minimum wage workers are applying for food stamps to feed their kids. Before you say it, no, I don't have to work for this company, my wife and I can survive without it with my government pension that I know I have earned. I do like the pay I receive from this company, it buys me all those Megabass lures that I love to use when I call in. Should my employer ever tire of the service that I provide them, they have every right to can me, but know this, I will not beg for my job, my electricity will not be turned off, my wife will have a roof over her head, and we will not starve. Now, what's the forcast for Monday...I might want to call in...just sayin.

Personally it is never acceptable for me to lie, I teach honesty to my kids. If your in the position not to worry about getting canned then hats off. I have been chasing work for the last five years while I have been ahead of the storm most of the time I have seen people put down and out. I value my morals and my employment. Family and employement come before fishing even a once in a life time chance. You kinda struck my nerve about you throwing the freedom and choice, or lack there of, to serve in the armed forces but man I don't totally agree and it doesn't give you any kind of free pass, but that is not the point. I will leave it to a thank you for your service, we are both free to disagree.

What I get from this is you spent 24 years in the army and still managed to avoid learning anything about integrity, duty or honor. But as long as you can still look in the mirror I guess that is all that matters. I know if I call in sick the only ones I am putting it too is my coworker who has to pick up my slack. I have a feeling some people do not care enough about their coworkers for that to matter.

Not asking for a pass. The word "lie" just stuck me wrong...my original post was meant to be funny and I would like to keep it that way. My boss is also my neighbor and he probably couldn't count on two hands the times he has walked out to his vehicle and has seen my boat hooked up to the truck or kayak loaded. I never lie to my boss when he asks me if the fish were biting. Oh, noclue...my coworkers do not have to pull up any slack from my absence, just the nature of our work. And as far as the lessons I learned serving my country...priceless. Now, I think I'll have that drink now MCS...ooops, don't drink. How about a cup of coffee instead? I'm going to pull out a couple of lake maps and plan my trip for Monday, just in case the weather is nice. You wanna come...or are you out of sick days? LOL

It is all good. I like coffee too! No need to call out sick I am gonna have my cake n eat it too lol hit the big bass spot for a hour or two on the way into the office. Saving my PTO days for field trips and when the old lady drops number 4. You have yourself a good trip as well.

Number 4!! I barely made it with two. Congrats are in order. Cherish every day you have with them, and when one of them looks up at you with those big sad eyes in the middle of summer and asks you to take them fishing...don't you think twice about calling in. You just tell the boss the First Sergeant gave you a pass! <g>
