I am in the market for a new spinning rod. I like the Powell Max the best right now. Will be uing the rod for wacky rigs, tubes, and shakey heads. Are there any thoughts on rods ~$150 that might out perform the Powell.

Thanks,

Jack

The St. Croix Avids can be had at around 170-190. Probably my favorite spinning rods. Just throwing an option out there for you.  I use the 6'8" MXF for wacky and lighter plastics.

Maybe check out a Duckett but I would stick with the Powell. Some of the Endurance models are on sale for around 100 FYI.

Go with what you like and feel the most confident about. That being said, if it were my money, I'd be buying a Duckett.

Jack, do you have a Bass Pro nearby? If so, take the reel you plan on using to the store and try it out on several different rods to see which *feels* best to you, as Bass Junkie mentioned.

Or, if BPS carries your reel, they'll be happy to open a box and put it on several rods for you to test out.

I would say the Pinnacle Perfecta rods are a good choice for a few $ over $150. I have a 7'2"M which is $144 on Tackle warehouse and really like it for the reasons you listed and drop-shots.

The St. Croix Avid would be a great rod as mentioned earlier!! The 6'8"MXF as is 6'9"MLXF they are both great choice fabulous rod's for what you are wanting, and to close to your budget price to settle for less????

I prefer a Shimano Cumara for your price range. You can find one for $150 fairly easy. Some people are stealing them for less. . The 6'8'' MXF, or 7'2'' MXF are solid choices.

That's a GREAT rod!

I think you should also consider  Pinnacle:  http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/109966-pinnacle-rods-and-reels/

I would also like to turn you to the Shimano Crucial - M/F 7'2" as another option and can be bought around that price.  For me my two choices would be Avid or Crucial.  I'd probably flip a coin between the two. Own both rods, love them both.

I have a 4 powell endurance rods and the only rod that I think is a better value is the falcon bucoo micro guide rods. The sensitivity is about the same between the two but the bucoos are lighter. The only thing that may make a difference to you is the bucoos have a eva handle and the powells are cork It doesnt make a difference to me I actually used to be a cork or nothing kinda of guy but recently have been liking the eva grips more.

Try to handle a Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth 6'9" MXF or 7'4" MF.  I don't have a spinning model, but have a couple casting models, and think these are great rods for the money.  Powell and Pinnacle are on my "to get" list as is Phenix and *** ***.  My Cumara 7'2" MHF (older casting model) goes with me every time out.

idk if you got a rod or not yet, but take a look at the *** *** black, 7'1 medium. i own one and i actually prefer it over my powell endurance. for $100 its one excellent rod.
