Scorcher214 Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Try this, get low like you're a running back getting ready to break through a tackle, head down. Now, lift your head up so you are looking forward. Is that how running back will have to go about trying to break through tackles? To me, that feels like an even worse position. If the defender were to hit your head with his shoulder pad or helmet....you're gonna have a bad time. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted March 26, 2013 Super User Posted March 26, 2013 You guys are missing the point of the rule. It isn't about keeping your head up it is about not using the crown of your helmet as a weapon. Like anyone who plays football knows leading with the top of your head is not how anyone is taught to run through a tackler. This isn't a rule about injuries now as much as it is trying and preventing long term effects from a culmination of hits over the course of a career. Felix hit it dead on though in it is how it's officiated and called more than anything. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted March 27, 2013 Super User Posted March 27, 2013 And think about it, if you are a runner trying to break a tackle what provides more power to you, your head or your shoulder? The rule has nothing to do with running up the middle, or keeping their head up. Only leading with their head which is stupid way to run anyway. 1 Quote
endless Posted March 28, 2013 Author Posted March 28, 2013 Now my next question is not towards the rules in the NFL but colleges and schools how are the rules applied in their system? If not applied it should be so players can be brought up knowing the rules system or at least obeying it. At least in the college system. Quote
