It is not as bad as people want you to think, only open field using the helmet as a weapon. Nothing to do with running hard up the inside, or bracing for or delivering a hard hit. Very few actual penalties for this one.

I can see it resulting in a lot more fumbles for one thing.  Ball carriers have traditionally curled up to protect the ball.  Now, if they do that, which requires lowering the head, the ball is more accessible to the defensive players.  Why don't they just take all the contact out of the game?  Then they won't need to worry about lawsuits and sympathetic judges or juries.

Yep, the game is just a shell of what it was even 10 years ago. I used to be a football fanatic, I can barely watch a game now. Just like all of the other safety rules they've implemented, it will do absolutely nothing to decrease the number of injuries.

So many of their runs would be 15 yard penalties now. This game is getting softer each and every year.

Please be respectful to some of us by not reopening the most painful 4 years of a Bills fan's life....

But really, this decision has me scratching my head. Colin Cowherd was great on the topic today. Normally a supporter of Goodell, he just doesn't get this rule.

That hit is the reason we have this rule, why lead with the head. Put his shoulder into the player instead, way more power in doing that.

 

I think it is very telling that Jim Brown, one of the greatest and most punishing runners ever is in favor of this rule.

Jim Brown was one of the smartest runners ever.  I can remember him literally walking behind two or three blockers, gaining a lot of yardage in the process.  He'd get tackled, and lie on the ground like he was injured.  He'd get up slowly, shake himself a little bit, and go back to work.  He was very efficient in the use of his energy.

 

In addition to his prodigious running skills, he was a master at conserving energy, using it only when necessary.

Yeah, yeah, yeah..... I hear this same kind of belly aching every year, yet about July the "I can't wait until football season starts" posts start popping up.  Then, there are a half a dozen threads about various football-related topics every week of the season.  The league is stuck between a rock and a hard place.  The over-sensitive media is on them to make the game safer, while the fans are on them to keep the game exciting.  But, whatever rule changes they make, we all know that come Fall, we're going to tune in until they make it two-hand touch!

They said that they analyzed every game in week 16 last year and I think it resulted in 3 penalties. You don't see people leading with the crown of their helmet to often for one, because you can't see where you are going.

It will be a non factor in most situations but it makes power hungry, dictator ****** bag Goodel feel good about himself for making the game "safer".

I think this rule is beyond stupid. Running backs are taught to get low and put your head down while running through tackles and defenders. Those are fundamentals. Lowing your head is naturally the first thing you do when trying to get low and maneuver through and around defenders.

 

This is going to cause alot of shite next season, just wait.

I remember a certain team getting screwed out of going to the Superbowl because of that stupid rule. I'm glad its gone. Would have been nice if it was gone in 2001.

I have great issues with the decrease in violence in the NFL. They are taking the fun out of the game. Personally I now watch rugby to get my fix of violence. The All Blacks are the team to watch. The NFL could learn a lot from rugby.

I heard the discussion about this only being 3 penalties last season.  If that's the case then show us those hits.  Inform the public as to exactly what this rule will look like.  I assume the Richardson run is one of them.

 

Time will tell about this rule.  It's not the analysis which led to the rule that matters.  It's going to be the way it's officiated and called on the field.  All it takes is one split second flag and a difficult review to cause another ruckus about this rule.
