LWD Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Hello Bassresource! Can bluegill be caught using crappie small plastic lures as well? Thanks, real new to crappie fishing, was just wondering since the lures are so small that bluegill can perhaps bite on them too? Quote
HeavyDluxe Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Short answer: Yes. Longer answer: Still, yes. The town pond I fish most often is a panfish factory. The kids and I have pulled them out of there with everything - live worms, snipped bits of old soft plastics, crappie jigs, small spinners, and everything in between. They are aggressive, competitive feeders and when they are turned on you can even catch them on a bare hook. Quote
LWD Posted March 19, 2013 Author Posted March 19, 2013 Hey HeavyDluxe, thanks for answering my question. Next time I go fishing for crappie, I can expect I may catch a bluegill too. , Quote
Super User Marty Posted March 19, 2013 Super User Posted March 19, 2013 Well, crappie can take lures considerably larger than bluegill can, but both species will take a wide variety of artificials. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 20, 2013 Global Moderator Posted March 20, 2013 Isn't much a bluegill won't try tro eat. I've caught them on 1/2oz spinnerbaits, DD22s, even small swimbaits. A couple of my favorite baits to fish for both at the same time are 2" grubs on a 1/32oz jighead, or a 2" tube on a 1/32oz jighead with a small safety pin spinner arm. Quote

Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted March 20, 2013 Super User Posted March 20, 2013 Little cranks like Strike King Bitsy Minnow work well for gills. Quote
Super User Marty Posted March 20, 2013 Super User Posted March 20, 2013 Little cranks like Strike King Bitsy Minnow work well for gills. I agree. Mini Fat Rap is my favorite, but I think anything of equivalent size would be just as good. I used to get them on the smallest size Kastmaster spoons. 1 Quote

Here a pic of some little cranks, they will catch bass as well. Top--Rebel TeenyR Mid left-- Mini Fat Rap Mid right-- Rapals UL Crank Bottom left---BPS XTS Micro Light Bottom Rt--Bitsy Minnow Quote
GeorgiaBassBros Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Ive caught bluegill on just about every smallish lure i own, they are super aggressive feeders and will gladly take any crappie lures you happen to throw by them. Quote
Trailer Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I always catch them on small jig head hooks and tubes of any color. The most disturbing bait I've caught them on was a Bomber crankbait for bass that dove to about 12 feet. The bait was bigger than the fish! Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted March 27, 2013 Super User Posted March 27, 2013 Bluegill are particularly responsive to small spoons; i.e.: 1/12 oz. KastMaster & 1/8 oz. Swedish Pimples. Works well in cold water too. Use a drop & pull technique. You'll get bit. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 27, 2013 Super User Posted March 27, 2013 Crappie normally won't hit something that doesn't move. A bluegill will hit just about anything, although i would say minnows and minnow type baits are on the bottom of their list. Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 you want bluegill on a lure, get a rebel tad fry or a rebel crickhopper. i prefer the tad fry a little more though for bluegill. its a floater/diver and works well for me... Quote

CABassin Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I have got one on a jitterbug LOL Me too! I was fishing for bass on a pond near a golf course and my brother and he bet me I wouldn't catch anything on it. Didn't catch any bass, but caught one of the biggest bluegill either of us had ever seen. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 28, 2013 Super User Posted March 28, 2013 I've caught bluegill on bare gold aberdeen hooks. Bluegills are more agressive and more protective of their beds than bass. They bed in large groups and can be easy pickin's with live bait. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 29, 2013 Super User Posted March 29, 2013 I have two baits in my bluegill rotation. Strike King Bitsy Pond Minnow, and a 1" gulp minnow on a dropshot. Quote
LWD Posted April 17, 2013 Author Posted April 17, 2013 caught my first bluegill on a lure the other day, 1/8 oz rooster tail. It was kind of like fishing for bass. It was the biggest bluegill I caught, size was from tip of middle finger to two inches below the wrist from mouth to tail. Quote
CoBass Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 When I target bluegills, my go to bait is a trout magnet. They're really small and the gills absolutely love them. Quote
gr8outdoorz Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 My favorite Bluegill bait is actually a fly. Its a small green/yellow frog popper. Bluegills on a 3wt or 4wt fly rod is a fun fight! Quote
Trailer Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Does anyone else throw the little tube baits for perch? Quote
Super User slonezp Posted April 20, 2013 Super User Posted April 20, 2013 Does anyone else throw the little tube baits for perch? Guys on the Great Lakes throw white soft plastic jerkbaits or paddletails. Otherwise it's softshells, minnows on crappie rigs and flies tipped with minnows, or shrimp. I do know some of the larger 14"-15" perch people have caught have had gobies in their guts Quote
wnybassman Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Bluegills will d**n near eat anything............... Quote
