ColdSVT Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Repeat after me "The enthusiast is not your customer" Sporting goods stores derive most of their profits from things other than fishing and "outdoors". Licensed apparel, footwear, golf, and believe it or not socks account for the bulk of their sales. Their business model is different than that of a specialty shop, which must cater to a different clientele. Folks who are "serious" about an activity spend less (or more accurately purchase less at full price) than casual or occasional shoppers. In a perfect world each department would function as boutique, and a few have had some success with this, but it is very difficult, particularly for a publicly traded company like DSG. I must say that Academy does a terrific job at it. So shop the winter clearance with your $10 off a $50 purchase coupon, and move on with your life, or go to the tackle shop and pay MSRP. yup!...and yup again! Quote
Jay Ell Gee Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Sounds like a bit of an attitude going on there. Don't know if I would want to deal with an employee who was stupid, (your words), and thought I was as stupid as he is. I work at BPS, and I feel I am there to assist the customer in getting what he or she wants, not tell him his choice is a POS. I am there to assist, not belittle them, or make sure they, and my co-workers, and my supervisors are aware of my superiority......sheesh!!! Hootie Hootie! What store and department do you work in? Shoot me a PM buddy. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 19, 2013 Super User Posted March 19, 2013 DSG is not a fishing store, it's an all round store for many types of athletic activities. The store Diggy refers to actually has a pretty decent selection and I like their saltwater section. The DSG by me is a couple of miles from the ocean yet their saltwater dept. is a bit lackluster, could be Diggy's is a 2 story and mine is a 1 story building. I think most would agree that an Ugly Stick is not the most ideal bass rod, that doesn't make it a bad rod especially for the value. I'd be willing to bet that on any given day I see more Ugly Sticks being used than all other brands combined, both being used offshore and inshore. Used by bait fisherman and by many that strictly toss lures, it ain't a bad stick for the money and the use. Where I fish if you don't know you're getting a strike, no rod in the world is going to help you. Quote

Grantman83 Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 It all depends on location and what group dick's is going after. The DSP I went to in florida when visiting a friend had a fishing section both freshwater and saltwater that was miles and miles beyond what I see here. If the demand is there, the stores will cater to it. Here in NY the Dick's is lame. Go down to danbury and its 3x the size and has some loomis g2's, rage rods, garcia villains etc. Not high end, but mid tier and especially higher than what the Poughkeepsie store has. Quote
