Dylan.747 Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 Can you effectively fish ponds that have water temps of about 46-48 degrees with an external temperature of about 60 degrees and sunny? I think I am going to head out on Tuesday to some local ponds for my first bass of 2013. Any tips? What lures, presentations, etc.? Quote
NC_Bass6 Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 im in a similar situation and the only thing ive been catching fish on is a ratl trap. i fish it pretty slow and since im in dirtier water i use red. if your water is clear i would suggest something slower though, maybe a jig or senko Quote
Dylan.747 Posted March 17, 2013 Author Posted March 17, 2013 What is the water temp in your smaller bodies of water? Quote
wademaster1 Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 Plastics, spinnerbaits, and cranks have all been working here. Even caught one on a popper. Quote
PondBoss Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Depending on water clarity for colors I personally fish fast with an erratic retrieve. I have been killing them on Bomber Square-A's, Swim Jigs, and Jerkbaits (both hard and soft). I understand all the talk about fishing slow, but if a fly buzzes by you a few times you swat at it. So will bass Quote
BigBassBarry Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I caught some on jerkbait the other day with the same conditions. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted March 22, 2013 Super User Posted March 22, 2013 You absolutely can. I have caught fish in small ponds in colder water than that for sure. Just fish a little slower and be prepared for a more subtle bite and you should be good. Quote
craww Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Absolutely. Big pond bass are active early. Best time of the year to catch a lunker IMO. I've had some of the best days in my life in those conditions. Quote
BuckMaxx Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Clown colored smithwick suspending rouge fished on 8 lb line start with about 15 seconds between jerks. They will tell you the count they want. Usually 5-8 seconds but I start with 15 too give the slow fish some time to get there. Quote
