Hello all

Recently I was given a 16ft, Old Town Guide Canoe from a friend that was moving out of state.  He didn't wanna haul it with him so it was passed on to me.

I was doing some research online and found that in order for me to get this canoe registered, I need to have a bill of sail OR an old registration.

As much as I'd hate to say it, none of these items exist.  I talked to my friend yesterday and he said they no longer have the bill of sale and never got a registration for it.  There are no boat registration decals anywhere on the canoe.

Does anyone know a workaround for this?  I will do what I have to, but I have no documentation anywhere for it.

Anyone have any advice they can offer?  (Again, I am located in Ohio)

Not real sure but from what I understand he can just give you a bill of sale and you can get it registered with that. It may have to be notorized, not sure? Kinda in the same boat (pun sorta intended) myself. My stepdad gave me a canoe 2-3 years ago and he also lost the registration. We never got around to finding out 100% about the bill of sale thing and he passed away recently. I guess if nothing else I can sell it to someone in the family and kind of back door the system? Or I could just scrap it. 70 pounds of aluminium has to be worth something! :eyebrows:  I'm sure if you call or stop at the DMV they will let you know what you need. Something I also need to do.

I agree, contact your DMV or DNR. How are you planning to propel your canoe? Here in NY registration is required only if a motor is used. I'm strictly a paddler, so I don't have to worry about such things.

hmmm, I stopped in at the registering place yesterday but they were closed and only open Mon-Fri.  So I will double check again about having to register it.  This was going to be nothing but a paddling canoe....no motor
