Spinshot Drop Hooks

Im confused about the size of the hook selection..

 

whats the difference between 1/0 and size 1? and size 2 etc?

 

dont know which size to buy

Depends on your bait selection.

 

I use the smallest hook possible.

 

A 1/0 is larger than a 1.

 

A 1 is larger than a 6.

 

I like  small straight shank worm hook or a circle hook for a drop shot.

 

Remember, all you do is lift your rod tip to set the hook so you don't need a big hook or a lot of power when fishing a drop shot.

 

Hook sizes are not standard in the industry so select a hook that you think will not interfere with the bait's natural motion in the water.

 

I have some Orvis saltwater circle hooks that work great.

 

I also have ReBarb's and the Gamakatsu Split Shot/Drop Shot size 1 (50410) and 2 (50409). Owner's Mosquito Hook size 2 is an option.

 

The smaller the better as long as you have confidence that your hook will be sufficient to land the bass.

If you are targeting largemouth bass and use Robo Worms or other finesse worms, I would go with Size 2 .  I've used them in the past and they really do work, but I don't like having to tie on another line for the lower section or for the weight.

I use the spin shot hooks , I keep 4 sizes of them on hand. 1/0 for baits with big bulky heads, like goby imitations, #1 for most all my general purpose work, #2's for when I really down size to tiny baits like a 2.5" gulp minnow, or a 2" senko, and #8's for perch/bluegill fishing.

I use the wide gaps an awful lot for T-Rig drop shot plastics.  2/0 covers most everything I do.

I'll be trying these out this season, but unlike most anglers I'll be using larger plastic baits so I purchased the larger 1/0 and 2/0 sizes. I'd say pick the hook size, SpinShot or other, according to the bait and how you'll be hooking it.  A size 1 will do fine for nose hooking a Senko, but if you intend to skin hook it, it'd be too small.  An alternative to this rig and one that I have tried, is using slip bobber stops on your main line on either side of the hook eye.  The hook will spin freely around the line and you can easily change the distance of your hook to the weight. I've pre-tied a couple of rigs on floro attached to a swivel as these old eyes have difficulty seeing without my bifocals and most of the time, I don't wear them on the water.

I am able to do pretty much everything I want to do with the size #1 spinshot hook. I go to the 2/0 EWG spinshot for larger baits. Those are the only 2 I carry with me.
