shootermcbob Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Has anyone tried the "Biffle Buggin" technique with the Biffle hardhead jig and the Gene Larew Biffle Bug? I like the "loose" head on the football jig, and I am wondering if it will give soft plastics more action? Any suggestions/advice/experiences are welcomed. Quote
sarcazmo Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 I just bought a couple of these. I want to buy a couple more slightly heavier. Seems like a jig technique designed to cover water fast. Quote
RyneB Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 havent tried it with the head, but the biffle bug is my favorite c-rig bait Quote
Quillback Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 I've thrown the Biffle Bug type jigs the last couple of years, usually with a Beaver type soft plastic on it. I like it on rocky/gravelly banks, doesn't do to well for me in mud. Excellent post-spawn bait, and big fish like it. Quote
shootermcbob Posted March 16, 2013 Author Posted March 16, 2013 Thanks for the feedback. Quillback...what size hardhead jig are you using? I bought some 5/16 and 7/16 to try out. Quote
gripnrip Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Crank the reel just fast enough to keep in contact with the bottom. The weight you use will depend on how deep you're fishing. I sometimes kill the bait so that way it looks like it is a darting crayfish to get away from the danger. Quote
Sodus Bay Scooter Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 I've used the 7/16 head with the biffle bug and pitched it at docks, jerking the bait short and quick to give it an undulating effect as I reel it back. Caught a bass on almost every dock as I drifted past them. Quote
shootermcbob Posted March 16, 2013 Author Posted March 16, 2013 Thanks for the info. I read where the design of the jighead is supposed to enhance the movement ot the bug itself. Looking at it, it kinda makes sense. However, I am aware that we fishermen are often as "caught" as the fish we chase 1 Quote
bkohlman Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 I bought a 1/2 oz Biffle Style head, hope to use it some this year with some beaver style, and experiment with some brush hogs as well. Quote
Quillback Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 Thanks for the feedback. Quillback...what size hardhead jig are you using? I bought some 5/16 and 7/16 to try out. I like 3/4 or 1/2. The 3/4 will really dig into stuff and make some noise and commotion. Quote
shootermcbob Posted March 17, 2013 Author Posted March 17, 2013 Does anyone believe that the design of the jighead adds to the baits action? Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 I've only tried the 5/16oz heads so far. The two plastics I've fished on them are, of course, the Biffle Bug and a Baby Paca Craw. I think I'm going to try some heavier heads this summer because I think this technique will produce in the lakes I fish. Lots of rocky points and such. Does anyone believe that the design of the jighead adds to the baits action? I think it only helps the baits action when fished as intended (cast & constant retrieve making contact with the bottom). I don't think it adds anything if you are just fishing it like a regular football jig. This is just MHO of course so I could be wrong. Quote
Quillback Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 I forgot to add that I like to fish the 3/4 oz heads on a 5 power or at least a 4 power rod. It makes it easier to pop it through the rocks and the extra power is helpful in setting the hook on the bigger fish, usually you'll hook them in the bony roof of their mouth so you want a good hookset to drive the hook through the bone. Super User webertime Posted March 17, 2013 Super User Posted March 17, 2013 I use them like a crankbait. Throw a beaver/craw or swimbait and retrieve them so they are just ticking off the rocks pausing occasionally. Sort of "power footballing". Quote
shootermcbob Posted March 18, 2013 Author Posted March 18, 2013 Anyone tried the biffle hardhead jig with any baits other than the biffle bug??? Results? Quote

river-rat Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 I've had success with the 7/16 head using a steady retrieve with either a Biffle Bug or a Netbait Kickin B. Quote
