H00kedOnBass Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 So a few days ago I was fishing one of my favorite ponds, best spot for frogging, I decided to whip out my new spro popping frog (big). After about 10 casts my frog gets inhaled! I say inhaled because there was no splash, no noise, nothing! To me it looked like when a whale comes up and blows air. I've never seen or had that happen before. My first guess was snakehead but it looked fatter and stubby. I fought w it for about 3 minutes and it never surfaced just took off w my line. The second I tightened my drag just a tad my 50# braid snaps and there goes my new frog and possibly a pb whatever it was! My question is what happens to that frog in the fishes mouth? They eventually die or what? Any chance of seeing him float up and get my frog back lol? I also don't understand how 50# power pro snapped considering I tie a mean polamor knot. Just wanted to share that crazy moment. Any comments? Quote
BrettD Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 I've never had 50# power pro snap I would guess that it was a snakehead that inhaled your frog and his teeth cut the line. Quote
aceofspades Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Snapping turtle. That's what I thought too while reading the OP. Those guys will make you think you caught a world record. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted March 15, 2013 Super User Posted March 15, 2013 It depends where the line breakage occurred. Unfortunately, I doubt we will ever know. Snapping turtle? I doubt it. Probably a big snakehead got is teeth on the line. FWC just did an electro shocking study in Margate if not mistaken and they shocked a 14lb snakehead. If an angler would have caught it they say it would have been a record. Lastly, braid is not bullet proof. If it becomes frayed your hooksets are definetly numbered. 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 16, 2013 Super User Posted March 16, 2013 I like what BassinLou wrote. The line was cut by some sharp teeth. And braid does get frayed and scratched. Maybe next time you will hold on and go for a ride until the fish wears itself out. We did this in Louisiana when saltwater fishing and something big took our bait so we just floated along in the 16-foot skiff until we landed the fish or the line broke. And you are in Florida where anything goes! Quote
808bass Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Most likely is a snakehead! I've had to same happen to me here in Florida. Quote
gripnrip Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Probably a toothy critter. I tie a double polamor knot so that way I'm not worried about knot slippage. Quote
